Port information & tips for Sasebo

Sasebo is a fascinating port city on the Japanese island of Kyushu and impresses with its unique mixture of maritime tradition and picturesque natural scenery. The city is nestled in the deep blue Sasebo Bay and enchants visitors with its international flair as well as its immediate proximity to the Saikai National Park. Absolute highlights include the breathtaking island world of Kujukushima as well as the impressive Huis Ten Bosch theme park, while the nearby Sasebo Seaside Park invites you to linger. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Miura Cruise Terminal, which is situated directly in the heart of the city and, thanks to its excellent location, is only a few minutes' walk from the lively Yonka-cho shopping street and the main train station.

Sasebo offers excellent accessibility for cruise passengers wishing to explore Japan. The port features the central Sasebo Port International Terminal as well as the Urashira Wharf for larger ships, both of which are well-connected and boast modern facilities.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region usually takes place by plane. The nearest airport is Nagasaki (NGS), approximately 30 to 34 kilometers away, with a travel time of about 70 minutes. Regular Saihi buses connect the airport hourly with Sasebo Station in about 1 hour 32 minutes (approx. ¥1,650). Fukuoka Airport (FUK) also serves as an important international airport, located about 81 to 101 kilometers away and requiring a travel time of around 1 hour 45 minutes. From Fukuoka, you can easily reach Sasebo Station by train (JR KYUSHU) in about 2 to 2.5 hours or by Nishitetsu Bus in 2 to 3 hours (approx. ¥1,800–¥3,300). Due to the long flight times from Europe, a pre-cruise overnight stay in Fukuoka or Sasebo is recommended for a relaxed start to your cruise.

Train

The JR Sasebo Station is ideally located for cruise guests, just about 400 meters or a 5-minute walk from the Sasebo Port International Terminal. For ships docking at Urashira Wharf, comfortable cruise line shuttle buses to the central station are often provided, taking about 10 to 15 minutes. From Sasebo, you can enjoy excellent rail connections within Japan, including direct train services to Hakata Station in Fukuoka in around 2 hours.

Car & Parking

Arriving by car at the Port of Sasebo is very convenient thanks to the good connection to the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway. The Sasebo-Chuo Interchange exit leads you directly into the city. In the immediate vicinity of the Sasebo Port International Terminal, you will find parking options such as the Sasebo Gobangai Trust Park. Furthermore, long-term parking spaces for cars are available at the Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort, a popular excursion destination in the region, which represents a practical option even for longer stays.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
