Port information & tips for Otaru (Sapporo)

Otaru is the charming maritime gateway to the North Japanese island of Hokkaido and impresses with its historic harbor atmosphere not far from the vibrant metropolis of Sapporo. The city enchants visitors with a nostalgic flair, characterized by beautifully preserved stone warehouses and romantic waterways. Cultural highlights include the picturesque Otaru Canal, the busy Sakaimachi Street with its exclusive glass art shops, and the world-famous Music Box Museum. Cruise ships usually dock at the modern Katsunai Pier, from which the city center and historic sights are easily accessible in just a few minutes on foot or by shuttle thanks to the prime location.

The port of Otaru, also known as the gateway to Sapporo and Hokkaido, is excellently accessible for cruise guests from the DACH region thanks to its central location and good transport connections. Cruise ships usually dock at Katsunai Pier or Pier 3, both of which are just a short walk from Otaru's charming city center.

Airplane

The nearest airport is New Chitose Airport (CTS), which serves as the main gateway to Hokkaido. From there, you can easily reach the port of Otaru in about 70 to 85 minutes by train. There are direct train connections (Rapid Airport) from New Chitose Airport to Otaru, which take about 73 minutes depending on the connection. Given the long journey from the DACH region, we recommend staying overnight in Sapporo or Otaru the day before embarkation to start your cruise relaxed. In addition, private transfer services are available, which will take you directly from the airport to the port in about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Train

Otaru is perfectly connected to the Japanese rail network. The central station is JR Otaru Station, from where you can reach the cruise terminal and surrounding sights such as the Otaru Canal in just 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Trains on the JR Hakodate Main Line run regularly from Sapporo Central Station to Otaru. The journey takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the type of train.

Car

For arrival by car, National Route No. 5 leads directly to Otaru. From Sapporo, use the Sasson Expressway (toll road) and take the Otaru IC exit. From there, you will reach the city center, where the port is also located, in about 10 minutes. Several public and private parking lots are available near the Otaru Canal and the port, including coin-operated parking and special tourist parking lots.

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation.
