Returning to the ship

Okushiri, a picturesque island off the southwest coast of Hokkaido in Japan, is primarily accessible to cruise guests from the DACH region via a combination of flight and ferry. Travel to Okushiri Port, the main docking point for ferries, is a delightful journey into a remote natural landscape thanks to well-coordinated connections.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region first takes you to one of Japan's international airports, such as Tokyo (NRT/HND) or Sapporo (CTS). From there, you fly on to Hakodate Airport (HKD) on Hokkaido, the region's most important transport hub. From Hakodate, there is a direct, approximately 30-minute domestic flight to Okushiri Airport (OIR). After landing on Okushiri, you can easily reach the ferry terminal and thus the port area by taxi or local buses, which depart directly from the airport or from the bus center in front of the ferry terminal.

Ferry

The ferry is the crucial connection to the island of Okushiri. Heartland Ferries offer regular connections from Esashi Port on Hokkaido to Okushiri Port, with the crossing taking about 2.5 hours. You can easily reach the Esashi ferry port from Hakodate by bus in about two hours. Reservations are generally not required for pedestrians, but if you wish to take a vehicle to the island, pre-booking is highly recommended. Parking is also available at the Okushiri Port Ferry Terminal.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long international flight and the necessary connecting links (domestic flight and/or ferry), an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel before embarkation is highly recommended. Plan at least one night in a larger city on Hokkaido, such as Sapporo or Hakodate, to continue your journey to Okushiri in a relaxed manner and without time pressure. This also allows you to enjoy the unique atmosphere of these Japanese cities before your cruise adventure.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
