Port information & tips for Kumamoto
Kumamoto on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu is a fascinating destination that harmoniously combines historical depth and modern Japanese charm. The city welcomes visitors with an authentic atmosphere and offers an impressive natural backdrop thanks to its location near the imposing Aso Volcano. Brilliant highlights include the majestic Kumamoto Castle, the artfully designed Suizenji Jojuen Garden, and the traditional Sakura-no-baba Johsaien district with its regional delicacies. Cruise ships dock at the modern Kumamoto Port International Cruise Pier. From this central docking point, the city center, located about twelve kilometers away, can be easily reached in around 30 minutes by shuttle bus or taxi, providing smooth access to all the cultural treasures of the prefecture.
The Kumamon Port Yatsushiro cruise port, located south of Kumamoto City, is an important gateway to the Japanese island of Kyushu and is easily accessible thanks to efficient transport links. Since the port is some distance from Kumamoto city center and the airport, a well-planned journey is recommended.
Airplane
For travelers from the DACH region, Aso Kumamoto Airport (KMJ) is the nearest airport. It is located approximately 32 kilometers from the Kumamoto Port ferry terminal. From Kumamoto Airport (KMJ), you can easily reach Kumamoto city center or Kumamoto Main Station by airport limousine bus in about 50 to 60 minutes. Alternatively, Fukuoka Airport (FUK), although further away (around 90 km from Kumamoto City), often offers a wider range of international flight connections and is quickly connected to Kumamoto Station from there via Shinkansen.
Transfer to the Port
International cruise ships usually dock at Kumamon Port Yatsushiro, which is located about 40 to 50 kilometers south of Kumamoto city center. From there, free shuttle buses provided by the port authorities usually run to JR Shin-Yatsushiro Station, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. From Shin-Yatsushiro Station, you can reach Kumamoto Station in just 12 minutes using the Kyushu Shinkansen. Taxis are a costly option for the long distance from the cruise port to Kumamoto City. From Kumamoto Main Station, you can easily reach many sights in the center by tram.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the distance of Kumamon Port Yatsushiro from the major transport hubs, it is recommended to arrive in Kumamoto at least one day before embarkation. Numerous hotels can be found near Kumamoto Station and in the city center. A pre-cruise stay allows for a relaxed start to your cruise and also offers the opportunity to explore the impressive Kumamoto Castle and the surrounding gardens.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
