Port information & tips for Komatsushima

Komatsushima on the east coast of Shikoku welcomes travelers as a charming gateway to Tokushima Prefecture and the fascinating culture of Japan. The city impresses with its maritime serenity and combines traditional legends, such as the famous Tanuki mythology, with warm hospitality. Visitors can discover cultural treasures here, such as the Onzan-ji Temple, part of the famous Shikoku Pilgrimage, as well as the extensive Komatsushima Minato Seizai Park and the interactive Awa Odori Kaikan Museum in the nearby prefecture capital. Cruise ships dock at the modern Shinko Pier in the port of Komatsushima, from where the local city center is easily accessible, and regular shuttle buses provide a quick connection to the lively center of Tokushima, which is about 15 minutes away.

The cruise port of Komatsushima, part of the larger Tokushima-Komatsushima Port in Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku Island, welcomes international cruise ships. Depending on the size of the vessel, ships dock either at the industrial Akaishi Wharf for large ships or at the Okinosu-soto Wharf, located closer to the city, for smaller ships, with a distance of approximately 19 kilometers between these terminals. Thanks to good regional connections, the port is easily accessible via the nearest airport and the Japanese rail network.

Airplane

For arrival from the DACH region, Tokushima Awaodori Airport (TKS) is the closest airport. It is located about 15 kilometers from Tokushima City. From the airport, you can easily reach Tokushima Station by limousine bus in about 28 to 35 minutes or by taxi in approximately 30 minutes at a cost of around 5,000 Yen. From Tokushima City, the onward transfer to the port depends on the respective terminal: For ships at Akaishi Wharf (large ships), a cruise line shuttle to Minami-Komatsushima Station is common, from where trains run to Tokushima Station. Alternatively, a taxi will take you to Tokushima Station in about 35 minutes for 5,500 to 6,500 Yen. If you dock at Okinosu-soto Wharf (smaller ships), you can reach Tokushima Station by local bus line 4 in about 30 minutes or by taxi in approximately 15 minutes for about 1,800 Yen. Due to the long flight time and the required onward travel within Japan, arrival at least one day before embarkation is recommended.

Train

The nearest major train station for the Komatsushima cruise port is Minami-Komatsushima Station (M06) on the JR Shikoku Mugi Line. Direct trains on the JR Mugi Line run from Tokushima Station to Minami-Komatsushima Station; the journey takes about 16 to 18 minutes and costs approximately 260 Yen, with connections roughly every two hours. For cruise guests at Akaishi Wharf, a shuttle service by the cruise line is often offered from Minami-Komatsushima Station to the pier to make the approximately 10-minute drive through the industrial area to the ship more comfortable.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long international flights from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland as well as the necessary transfers within Japan, a pre-cruise hotel in Tokushima City is highly recommended. An overnight stay before embarkation allows for a relaxed start to your cruise, as you can buffer any flight delays and make the multimodal journey to the port stress-free. Many hotels in Tokushima City also offer excellent connections to the train station and bus lines, facilitating the transfer to the port while giving you the opportunity to explore the charming prefectural capital before your departure.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
