Cruise ships dock at the modern Shinfuto Wharf in the port of Hitachinaka, from which the city center and the central Katsuta Station are perfectly accessible in just around 20 minutes travel time thanks to comfortable shuttle buses.
Hitachinaka is a significant cruise port in Ibaraki Prefecture that has established itself as a gateway to Japan's natural beauty and culture. For international guests, arrival is primarily by air, followed by convenient train connections to the regional hub, Katsuta. Since docking takes place in an industrial area, walking at the terminal is not permitted, and shuttle buses ensure the transfer to the nearest train station.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region typically takes place via Japan's international airports. The nearest major international airport is Narita International Airport (NRT), located about 87 kilometers from the port. From there, you can easily reach Hitachinaka via a direct bus to the west exit of Katsuta Station in about 2 hours and 25 minutes (cost: approx. ¥3,900–¥4,400). Alternatively, the smaller Ibaraki Airport (IBR) is about 30 kilometers away. A taxi ride from there to the port or to Katsuta takes about 40 to 45 minutes and costs approximately ¥7,000–¥8,524.
Train
The central arrival point for cruise guests is Katsuta Station, an important regional hub. From Tokyo, you can reach Katsuta directly from Ueno Station via the JR Joban Line Limited Express "Hitachi," a journey that takes about 70 minutes. Free shuttle buses are often available from Katsuta Station to the Port of Hitachinaka on cruise days, providing a direct transfer. If no shuttle is available, a taxi will take you to the pier in about 15 minutes, with costs ranging from approximately ¥3,200–¥4,000.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay in Japan before embarkation day is highly recommended to ensure a relaxed start to your cruise. Hotels in Tokyo or the surrounding area, such as the cities of Mito or Hitachinaka, provide a comfortable base. From there, you have excellent connections to Katsuta Station, where transfers to the cruise terminal are straightforward. Please note that entering or leaving the industrial terminal on foot is not permitted, making the use of organized transfers essential.
