Port information & tips for Aomori

Aomori is the charming prefectural capital at the northern tip of Japan's main island Honshu and a fascinating gateway to the culturally rich Tohoku region. The city delights with its maritime location on Mutsu Bay and a harmonious blend of striking architecture and deep-rooted traditions. Directly on the waterfront, the spectacular Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse with its artistic floats, the prominent ASPAM center, and the glass-fronted A-FACTORY market hall invite discovery thanks to their central location. Cruise ships dock at the modern Shin-Chuo Pier, which is located right in the heart of the port district. From here, guests can comfortably reach the vibrant city center and Aomori Station in about ten minutes on foot, ensuring an excellent connection.

The Port of Aomori at the northern tip of the main island of Honshu impresses with its excellent connection to the Japanese transport network and its immediate proximity to the city center. Cruise ships usually dock at the central Shin-Chuo Pier or, in the case of larger ship units, at the Okidate Wharf, which is about three kilometers away.

Airplane

Aomori Airport (AOJ) is located around 15 kilometers south of the port and is served several times daily from the Tokyo airports Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT), which represents a convenient connecting flight for guests from the DACH region after their long-haul flight. From the airport, you can reach the terminals in about 35 minutes by taxi, with inexpensive fixed rates often offered for the direct journey to the ship.

Train

Arriving by the legendary Shinkansen high-speed train offers a comfortable way to enjoy the Japanese landscape and leads directly to Shin-Aomori Station. From there, thanks to the good connections, you can reach the International Cruise Terminal in around 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or use the local train for the short onward journey to the central Aomori Station, which is within walking distance of the inner-city berths.

Pre-Cruise Hotel & Transfer

Due to the time difference and the long flight duration from Europe, arriving the day before is highly recommended to start your holiday in a relaxed manner. Numerous high-quality hotels in Aomori city center are located in direct proximity to the striking, pyramid-shaped ASPAM building and the port, so that on embarkation day you benefit from short distances to the terminal and uncomplicated luggage drop-off.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
