Pulau Kokoila, a remote island in the heart of the Raja Ampat archipelago in Indonesia, is a paradise for expeditions and diving trips. Arrival is primarily by plane via Sorong, West Papua, which serves as the most important gateway to this fascinating region. Locally, there are no classic port facilities; embarkation usually takes place directly from your expedition ship using tender boats or Zodiacs.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region typically involves long-haul flights to international hubs in Indonesia, such as Jakarta (CGK), Denpasar/Bali (DPS), Makassar (UPG), or Manado (MDC). From there, an inland flight continues to Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) in Sorong, West Papua. Direct flights to Sorong are possible from Jakarta in about 3.5 to 4 hours, from Makassar in around 2.5 hours, and from Manado in approximately 2 hours.
Onward Journey to the Islands
From Sorong Airport (SOQ), you can easily reach the port of Sorong (Pelabuhan Rakyat Sorong) by taxi or ride-sharing service in about 10 to 20 minutes, with costs around 100,000 IDR. From there, public ferries depart twice daily to Waisai on Waigeo Island, the main access point to Raja Ampat, with a travel time of about two hours. Alternatively, many luxury cruise providers and liveaboards offer a direct pickup service from the port of Sorong, often including airport transfers. Further individual travel to more remote islands like Pulau Kokoila in the Misool area is usually by private speedboat, organized by your accommodation or cruise line.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Embarkation
Given the long flight times and the possibility of delays with domestic flights, it is strongly recommended to arrive in Sorong at least one day before the planned embarkation and to schedule an overnight stay. Hotels in Sorong such as the Swiss-Belhotel Sorong, Aston Sorong, or favehotel Sorong offer comfortable options, many with practical airport shuttles and in convenient proximity to the port. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise adventure in Raja Ampat.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
