Port information & tips for Alor Island
The Alor Archipelago is a pristine paradise in eastern Indonesia and is considered one of the best-kept secrets for cruisers. The region impresses with its authentic atmosphere, spectacular volcanic landscapes, and a world-renowned underwater world. Cultural highlights such as the traditional mountain village of Takpala, where the fascinating culture of the Abui tribe remains alive, and the Museum Daerah 1000 Moko are easily accessible thanks to short distances. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Pelabuhan Kalabahi, which is situated right in the heart of the charming island capital. From this berth, the vibrant local markets can be easily explored on foot, and the port also serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding coral reefs.
Alor, in the archipelago of the same name, is a fascinating destination in Indonesia that guests from the DACH region typically reach via Fly & Cruise. Due to its geographical location and the necessary domestic flights, direct travel to the port is not possible.
Airplane
Travel to Alor is primarily conducted via several flight segments. International flights first lead to major hubs in Indonesia, such as Jakarta (CGK) or Denpasar/Bali (DPS). From there, the journey continues with a domestic flight, usually via Kupang (KOE) on West Timor, as Kupang offers the only direct flight connection to Alor Island Airport (ARD), also known as Mali Airport. Alor Airport (ARD) is a small domestic airport serving Kalabahi, the administrative seat of the Alor Regency.
Transfer & Shuttle
After landing at Alor Island Airport (ARD) near Kalabahi, local transport options are available. Many dive resorts and cruise providers organize pickup services directly from the airport to ensure a comfortable transfer to your accommodation or the port. Alternatively, you can use local ojeks (motorcycle taxis) or public buses to reach various locations on the island.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to long flight times and the necessity of domestic connections, we strongly recommend arriving at least one day before the scheduled embarkation. An overnight stay in Jakarta or Bali can reduce travel stress, especially if the onward flight to Alor takes place the next day. For connections via Kupang (KOE), an intermediate overnight stay is often advisable to reach the connecting flight to Alor stress-free. Many hotels in Indonesia's larger cities also offer practical services for travelers.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and consider that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
