Getting to the actual "port" – Nimati Ghat near Jorhat, the ferry terminal for the island – requires a combination of air travel, rail, or local transfers, followed by a scenic ferry crossing. There are no classic cruise terminals; instead, Nimati Ghat serves as the central arrival point for passage to the island.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Jorhat Airport (JRH), also known as Rowriah Airport, located approximately 14 to 20 kilometers from Nimati Ghat. This airport is connected by regular domestic flights to major Indian cities such as Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi. For international guests from the DACH region, a flight to Guwahati (Gauhati Airport, GAU) followed by a connecting flight to Jorhat is recommended. After landing in Jorhat, you can easily reach Nimati Ghat by taxi or local buses in about 30 to 60 minutes.
Rail
Majuli itself has no rail connection. The nearest railway stations are Jorhat Town Railway Station and Mariani Junction, located about 19 to 20 kilometers from Jorhat, with Mariani often offering better connections to larger cities. From Jorhat, you can reach Nimati Ghat by taxi, auto-rickshaw, or local bus. For a more relaxed journey, the larger station in Guwahati can also serve as a starting point, with trains running from there to Jorhat.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Local Transfer
Due to the longer journey, especially for international flights, an overnight stay in Jorhat or Guwahati before embarkation is highly recommended. This allows for a stress-free arrival at Nimati Ghat, the starting point for the ferry crossing to Majuli. Numerous local transfer options such as taxis, private vehicles, or shared taxis are available from Jorhat to take you directly to the ferry pier. Ferries run regularly during the day between 8:00 AM and approximately 3:30 PM, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the island. The ferries transport not only passengers but also vehicles, which is an option if traveling individually by rental car.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination – is generally about one hour before the scheduled departure.
