Port information & tips for Sihanoukville

Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is Cambodia's radiant gateway to the Gulf of Thailand and invites travelers to discover the fascinating blend of tropical flair and cultural depth. The port city impresses with its location on extensive stretches of coastline and offers comfortable access to the treasures of Southeast Asia thanks to dynamic development. Cultural highlights include the magnificent Wat Leu temple with its panoramic views over the coast, as well as the colorful Phsar Leu market and the relaxed Independence Beach. Cruise ships dock directly at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, from where the city center, about six kilometers away, and the golden beaches can be reached comfortably in just a few minutes by shuttle or tuk-tuk.

Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is an important port in Cambodia that is increasingly establishing itself as a popular stop for cruises. The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port is a commercial port used by cruise ships. Since it is a long journey from the DACH region, it is recommended to arrive with an overnight stay prior to the cruise due to flight times.

Airplane

Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS) is the nearest airport to the port, approximately 18 to 20 kilometers away. There are no direct flights from the DACH region; arrival usually takes place via major hubs in Asia such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, or Ho Chi Minh City, or with a connecting flight via Phnom Penh. Thanks to the relatively short distance, the airport is easily accessible by taxi in about 19 to 35 minutes.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS) or a city hotel, you can easily reach the cruise port by taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. Within Sihanoukville, Tuk-Tuks and ride-hailing apps like Grab or PassApp are also popular and cost-effective means of transport. Since the port area is industrial and located about 5 to 10 kilometers from the city center, many cruise lines often offer their own shuttle buses to take passengers to central points in the city or to the beaches.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey from German-speaking countries, staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel in Sihanoukville is highly recommended to start your cruise relaxed. Numerous hotels in the city center or near popular beaches like Independence Beach or Sokha Beach offer comfortable accommodations. Many of these hotels also facilitate easy onward travel to the port and can often arrange transfers.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
