Cruise ships typically use tenders to reach the central Public Jetty right at the Visitor Centre, while smaller expedition ships dock at the FIPASS pier, ensuring convenient access to the picturesque town center and nearby penguin colonies via short walks or shuttle services.
The Falkland Islands are a unique destination in the South Atlantic, where the capital, Stanley, is usually accessible to cruise passengers via tender boat, as ships anchor in the harbor. A direct cruise terminal for embarkation from the DACH region is not available.
Airplane
Travel to the Falkland Islands is primarily by plane via Mount Pleasant Airport (MPN). There are no direct connections from the DACH region; flights usually go through South America, for example with LATAM from Santiago de Chile (SCL) or Punta Arenas (PUQ), which fly to MPN on Saturdays. Alternatively, British military charter flights from RAF Brize Norton (UK) with limited civilian contingents are also possible, operating on Sundays and Wednesdays and including a refueling stop on Ascension Island. Given the long flight times, it is advisable to arrive at least one day before the scheduled embarkation to start the cruise experience relaxed.
Transfer to the Port
It is approximately 53 to 56 kilometers from Mount Pleasant Airport (MPN) to the capital, Stanley. Buses are available for the transfer, which should ideally be booked in advance and take guests directly to their accommodation in Stanley. A taxi ride takes about 56 minutes. Cruise ships usually anchor in Stanley Bay, and passengers are brought by tender boats to the centrally located pier, which is situated directly in the heart of the city. However, tender times are weather-dependent and can be restricted in strong winds.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long international flights and the necessity of transferring from the airport to the port, it is strongly recommended to plan an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Stanley. This allows for a stress-free arrival and minimizes the risk of travel delays before embarkation. Various charming accommodations are available in Stanley, including the Malvina House Hotel or The Waterfront Boutique Hotel, both of which are centrally located and provide a pleasant base for exploring the capital.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
