Port information & tips for Pomene
Pomene on the wild and romantic coast of Mozambique is considered an untouched paradise and offers a fascinating combination of African wilderness and turquoise ocean. The atmosphere is characterized by its idyllic location between a glassy lagoon and the open sea, providing travelers with an exclusive nature experience thanks to fine sandy beaches and dense mangrove forests. Highlights include the species-rich Pomene Nature Reserve, the historic ruins of the Old Pomene Hotel, and the beautiful MSC Pomene Safari Beach. Cruise ships anchor here, with guests arriving via a special tender pier directly at the MSC Pomene Safari Beach Club, from where they can easily explore the surrounding nature trails and the extensive shore areas.
Pomene in Mozambique is a natural and exclusive cruise destination that is accessed by ships via tender boats. Traveling from the DACH region requires a well-planned combination of a long-haul flight and a subsequent specialized transfer to reach this remote paradise in a relaxed manner.
Airplane
Arrival is primarily by plane to the nearest airport, Inhambane (INH), which is served from Johannesburg (JNB) by airlines such as LAM (Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique). Direct travel to Pomene is not possible as it does not have its own airport. For international guests from the DACH region, Maputo (MPM) is often the first point of entry in Mozambique, from where further domestic flights to Inhambane can be booked.
Transfer & Shuttle
A ground transfer from Inhambane (INH) airport to the Pomene harbor area is essential. The final 58 to 60 kilometers lead over a sandy track that is only passable with robust all-wheel drive vehicles (4x4) and takes about three to four hours. Cruise lines often offer organized shuttle services that guarantee a comfortable journey to the tender boat anchorage. Please note that no public transport, such as taxis or buses, runs directly to Pomene. The cruise ships anchor off the coast, and tender boats take guests to the MSC Pomene Safari Beach Club, a resort located directly on the beach, in about 30 minutes.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from Europe and the remote location of Pomene, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel is strongly recommended. This ensures a relaxed arrival, and potential flight delays will not pose a problem for timely embarkation. Suitable locations for an overnight stopover are Maputo or Inhambane, allowing you to start the onward transfer the next day well-rested.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
