Toamasina, also known as Tamatave, is the vibrant gateway to the east coast of Madagascar and the most important seaport of this fascinating island nation. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the lively Bazary Be market, with its treasures of vanilla and local handicrafts, as well as the historic Place de la Colonne. Additionally, the location allows for exciting excursions to the idyllic Canal des Pangalanes. Cruise ships dock at the central Môle C of the Port of Toamasina, from where the city center, just two kilometers away, can be reached quickly and comfortably thanks to available pousse-pousse rickshaws and short transfer routes.
Toamasina, also known as Tamatave, is Madagascar's most important port on the east coast and is usually reached by cruise passengers from the DACH region as part of a Fly and Cruise package. Airplane
Arrival in Toamasina is primarily via the nearby Toamasina Airport (TMM), also known as Ambalamanasy Airport. It is located only about 4.5 kilometers from the city center and the port, allowing for a short onward journey. Direct flights from the DACH region to Toamasina are not common; instead, the journey usually involves an international flight to Ivato International Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, followed by a convenient domestic flight to TMM.
Transfer and Shuttle
From Toamasina Airport (TMM), you can easily reach the port or your pre-cruise hotel by taxi or tuk-tuk (pousse-pousse), with the journey taking only about five minutes. For a stress-free transition, it is recommended to book a private transfer in advance, which will meet you directly at the arrival hall exit. Within the port area, a free shuttle bus operated by the port authority also runs, taking you from the pier to the port exit. A direct walk from the port into the city is not advisable due to the distance and local conditions.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight times to Madagascar, we recommend staying overnight in Toamasina at least one day before embarkation to begin your cruise refreshed and relaxed. Hotels such as the Sunny Golf Hotel, the Hotel Calypso, or the Hotel H1 Tamatave are conveniently located near the airport and some offer comfortable services such as a 24-hour airport shuttle. An early arrival also allows you to gather your first impressions of the lively port city and acclimatize to the tropical climate.
Check-in and Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
