Nosy Mangabe is a fascinating nature reserve on an island in Antongil Bay on the east coast of Madagascar, typically visited as part of expedition or smaller cruises. Since the island does not have its own port for cruise ships, arrival at the actual island access point is by tender boat from the cruise ship. For guests from the DACH region, careful planning of the Fly & Cruise arrival is essential.
Airplane
Travel to Nosy Mangabe is primarily by plane, as road connections to Maroantsetra, the starting point for boat trips to the island, are considered extremely difficult and time-consuming. First, you fly internationally to Ivato International Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. From there, there are onward flights to Maroantsetra Airport (WMN), the nearest airport to the reserve. The flight time from Antananarivo to Maroantsetra is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1.3 hours, covering a distance of around 441 to 450 kilometers. Direct flights are usually offered by Madagascar Airlines.
Transfer to the Embarkation Point
After your arrival at the small regional Maroantsetra Airport (WMN), located in the immediate vicinity of the town, you can easily reach the boat jetty by taxi or pre-organized transfer. From there, the scenic boat trip to the island of Nosy Mangabe begins, taking between less than an hour and about two hours, depending on the provider and weather conditions. This boat tour is also the beginning of your nature experience, as you can enjoy the coastal landscape of Antongil Bay.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region to Madagascar and the necessary connecting flights to Maroantsetra, a pre-cruise overnight stay is strongly recommended. An overnight stay in Antananarivo after the long-haul flight allows for a relaxed onward journey the next day. Alternatively, an overnight stay in Maroantsetra before the boat trip to Nosy Mangabe can be useful to cushion potential flight delays and start your cruise adventure or visit to the reserve well-rested.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
