Returning to the ship
Nosy Mangabe is a fascinating nature reserve on an island in Antongil Bay on the east coast of Madagascar, typically visited as part of expedition or smaller cruises. Since the island does not have its own port for cruise ships, arrival at the actual island access point is by tender boat from the cruise ship. For guests from the DACH region, careful planning of the Fly & Cruise arrival is essential.
Airplane
Travel to Nosy Mangabe is primarily by plane, as road connections to Maroantsetra, the starting point for boat trips to the island, are considered extremely difficult and time-consuming. First, you fly internationally to Ivato International Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. From there, there are onward flights to Maroantsetra Airport (WMN), the nearest airport to the reserve. The flight time from Antananarivo to Maroantsetra is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1.3 hours, covering a distance of around 441 to 450 kilometers. Direct flights are usually offered by Madagascar Airlines.
Transfer to the Embarkation Point
After your arrival at the small regional Maroantsetra Airport (WMN), located in the immediate vicinity of the town, you can easily reach the boat jetty by taxi or pre-organized transfer. From there, the scenic boat trip to the island of Nosy Mangabe begins, taking between less than an hour and about two hours, depending on the provider and weather conditions. This boat tour is also the beginning of your nature experience, as you can enjoy the coastal landscape of Antongil Bay.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region to Madagascar and the necessary connecting flights to Maroantsetra, a pre-cruise overnight stay is strongly recommended. An overnight stay in Antananarivo after the long-haul flight allows for a relaxed onward journey the next day. Alternatively, an overnight stay in Maroantsetra before the boat trip to Nosy Mangabe can be useful to cushion potential flight delays and start your cruise adventure or visit to the reserve well-rested.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
The uninhabited island of Nosy Mangabe in Masoala National Park is mostly reached by the ship's own tenders directly at the beach and, thanks to its compact size, offers an immediate start to the nature experience.
On foot
The entire protected area can be perfectly explored on foot and has a well-developed system of hiking trails. These paths lead you within a short time to the historical rock inscriptions of the seafarers as well as to the observation points for the island's rare wildlife.
Local pirogues and motorboats
Traditional pirogues and small motorized boats operate regularly between the island and the nearby town of Maroantsetra. These function as local water taxis and allow for a comfortable crossing to the Madagascan mainland for further exploration.
Expedition Zodiacs
Landing is primarily done with the ship's own Zodiacs, which drop you off directly at the fine sandy shore. These flexible boats are ideally suited for the shallow coastal waters and ensure a smooth and comfortable transfer between your cruise ship and the wilderness.
To make the most of your stay on the uninhabited natural gem of Nosy Mangabe, we recommend exploring the dense rainforest paths in combination with the fascinating relics of maritime history directly on the shores of Antongil Bay.

The dense rainforest paths
On the winding trails through the lush interior of the island, nature lovers will discover rare species of lemurs as well as the fascinating leaf-tailed gecko, while the untouched flora simultaneously offers a unique jungle experience in one of Madagascar's most precious protected areas.
The historic rock engravings
At a sheltered stretch of beach, you will find centuries-old inscriptions left by European sailors from the 16th century; furthermore, these stone testaments provide an exciting insight into the region's maritime past and, thanks to their location, are ideal for a cultural detour during your hike.
Plage des Hollandais & Betsimisaraka Graves
The historic Plage des Hollandais on the island of Nosy Mangabe is easily accessible by tender boat and uniquely combines untouched nature with fascinating history. During a short walk through the coastal forest, you will discover historic rock inscriptions left by Dutch sailors from the 16th century as well as the mystical graves of the Betsimisaraka people, which are deeply rooted in local culture. Thanks to well-marked paths, this jungle-like sanctuary can be explored safely, and the shaded sections beneath majestic trees provide an impressive atmosphere for wildlife viewing. Ideally, start your excursion early in the morning to experience the endemic lemurs and geckos during their most active phase and return relaxed to the ship in good time before the midday heat.
The return journey from your discoveries in the rainforest or from the mainland is usually by water, with coordination by local guides ensuring a punctual return to the ship.
Boat Transfers and Tenders
As Nosy Mangabe is an island, the return trip to the ship is exclusively by motorized boats or the ship's own tenders directly from the beach area. These departure points are marked by park rangers and the expedition team, and thanks to the regular frequency, you will get back on board quickly.
Pousse-Pousse and Local Transfers
If you have visited nearby Maroantsetra, local Pousse-Pousse will take you quickly and comfortably to the central landing stage on the riverbank. From there, the organized transfer boats depart and bring you safely across Antongil Bay back to your ship.
On Foot and Local Orientation
On the island itself, well-maintained paths lead from the viewpoints and lemur-spotting areas directly back to the main beach. The paths are easy to find thanks to clear markings and lead you directly to the meeting point for the return journey, where the staff will be waiting for you.
