Antsiranana, located in northern Madagascar, is one of the most fascinating port cities in the Indian Ocean, impressing visitors with its spectacular location in one of the world's largest natural bays. The city exudes a unique charm thanks to its well-preserved colonial architecture and lively markets, while the surrounding area delights with natural wonders such as the Montagne d’Ambre National Park, the picturesque "Three Bays", and the iconic Sugar Loaf rock formation. Cruise ships use the central Port d’Antsiranana, which provides direct access to the city. Thanks to its immediate proximity to the center, the historic streets and local attractions can be easily explored on foot or with one of the typical tuk-tuks in just a few minutes.
Antsiranana, formerly known as Diego Suarez, is located at the northernmost tip of Madagascar and is a fascinating cruise port with one of the largest natural harbors in the world. Most larger ships tender passengers ashore, with the small harbor located only about 15-20 minutes' walk from the city center, offering convenient accessibility. Due to its remote location, an early arrival is recommended, ideally with an overnight stay before embarkation.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region is primarily by plane, as Antsiranana does not offer direct intercontinental flights. The nearest airport is Antsiranana-Arrachart Airport (DIE), which is located about 3 to 8 kilometers from the city center and the port. Travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland usually fly with layovers, for example via Antananarivo (TNR) in Madagascar, or via Réunion (Saint-Denis, RUN) with Air Austral and Mayotte (Mamoudzou, DZA) with EWA Air. The long journey requires careful planning of flight connections.
Transfer & Shuttle
You can easily reach the port or your hotel from Antsiranana-Arrachart Airport (DIE) by taxi or a pre-booked shuttle service. The travel time is about 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis are available directly at the port and airport, although it is advisable to negotiate the fare in advance. Many hotels also offer their own transfers, which makes the transition after the flight even easier. Given the long flight times from Europe and potential delays, an overnight stay in Antsiranana the day before the cruise is highly recommended.
