The port of Tarrafal on São Nicolao is a port of call for cruises, but not an embarkation port for international travel. Arrival for guests from the DACH region always requires a stopover on one of the larger islands of Cape Verde before continuing by domestic flight or ferry.
Airplane
To travel to São Nicolao, you first fly to one of the international airports of Cape Verde, such as Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID) on Sal or Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) on Santiago. From there, there are connecting flights with BBN Airlines (formerly Cabo Verde Airlines) to Preguiça Airport (SNE) on São Nicolao. Flight times for these domestic connections are short and take about 25 to 40 minutes, for example from São Vicente or Sal. There are no international direct flights to São Nicolao, so careful planning with stopovers is essential.
Island Transfer on São Nicolao
Preguiça Airport (SNE) is located approximately 13 to 13.4 kilometers from Tarrafal. A taxi ride to the port takes about 17 minutes and offers a convenient transfer option. Alternatively, so-called Aluguers, local shared taxis or minibuses, are available and represent a cost-effective option. Although ferry connections exist from islands such as São Vicente to the port of Tarrafal, domestic flights are recommended as the preferred option for DACH travelers due to higher reliability and shorter travel times.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the required journey with at least one stopover in Cape Verde, it is advisable to arrive one day before the planned embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start and provides a buffer for any delays with domestic flights or ferry connections. Numerous accommodations, including charming bed and breakfasts and smaller hotels, are available directly in Tarrafal and provide a comfortable base before your cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
Even during the trip, the following applies: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
