Port information & tips for Praia (São Tiago)

Praia is the vibrant capital of Cape Verde on the island of Santiago, fascinatingly combining lively African rhythms with the charming heritage of the colonial era. The city impresses with its authentic flair and its picturesque location on a rocky plateau high above the sparkling Atlantic. Cultural highlights include the historic city center "Plateau" with the magnificent Palácio Presidencial, the Pro-Cathedral Nossa Senhora da Graça, and the bustling Mercado de Sukupira. Cruise ships dock at Porto da Praia, which serves as an ideal starting point for discoveries due to its location. Visitors are separated from the center, about two kilometers away, by only a short shuttle or taxi ride, which also provides a comfortable start to their shore excursion.

The Port of Praia on the island of Santiago is the maritime hub of Cape Verde and impresses with its immediate proximity to the island's capital and the international airport. Due to its geographical location, arrival from the DACH region is traditionally by plane, allowing for a quick transition to the Porto da Praia cruise terminal.

Airplane

Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) is located only about 6 kilometers from the port and is regularly served from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland via the Lisbon hub with TAP Air Portugal or by charter flight. Thanks to the short distance, you can reach the port area in just about 10 to 15 minutes via the well-developed main road after landing.

Transfer & Taxi

Licensed taxis are available at the airport at all times for the journey to the terminal, bringing guests comfortably and directly to the ship. In addition, most cruise lines offer organized transfer buses that meet travelers upon arrival and escort them safely along with their luggage to the cruise ship's berth.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

To experience the Cape Verdean joy of life in a relaxed way and to create a buffer for your flight arrival, an overnight stay in the Prainha or Plateau districts is recommended. These neighborhoods are only a few minutes' drive from the port and offer a good selection of hotels from which the cruise terminal can be reached within a very short time the next morning.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
