Port information & tips for Algiers

Algiers, the "White City" on the Mediterranean, welcomes visitors with a fascinating blend of French colonial architecture and oriental history. The Algerian capital impresses with its terraced location on a wide bay and radiates a unique glow thanks to its brilliant white facades. In the immediate vicinity of the port, the historic Casbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site with winding alleys, beckons, as well as the magnificent Ketchaoua Mosque and the sprawling Place des Martyrs. Cruise ships dock directly at the centrally located Gare Maritime d’Alger. Thanks to this prime location, travelers can reach the vibrant city center and the Boulevard Che Guevara waterfront promenade in just a few minutes on foot, allowing for a seamless transition to the city's cultural treasures.

The Port of Algiers, a centrally located and significant maritime hub in North Africa, is easily accessible for cruise guests thanks to its location on the edge of the city center. Embarkation takes place directly at the pier of the main terminal, the Gare Maritime d'Alger, which allows for a smooth arrival. For travelers from the DACH region, careful planning with a focus on air travel and a pre-cruise stay is recommended due to the long journey and Algerian visa regulations.

Airplane

Arrival from the DACH region to Algiers is convenient by plane via Houari Boumediene International Airport (ALG), located approximately 17 to 20 kilometers southeast of the city. Numerous airlines offer connections with transfers at European hubs to bring you relaxed to the Algerian capital. The journey from the airport to the port or city center takes about 25 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG), you can reach the cruise terminal flexibly. Taxis are available, and it is advisable to agree on the fare in advance; the costs to the city center are on average around €8.20 (1,200 DZD). For maximum comfort, private transfer services provide a direct trip at a fixed price without waiting times. Additionally, bus line 100 runs every 30 minutes between the airport and Place du 8 mai 1945 (Place des Martyrs), from where further public transport goes to the port area.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long flight times from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as possible visa and entry formalities, an overnight stay in Algiers before the cruise is advisable. Numerous hotels near the port and in the city center offer comfortable stays, allowing you to arrive relaxed and enjoy the first impressions of this fascinating city before embarkation. Many of these accommodations are only a short drive from the terminal, ensuring you start your cruise well-rested and on time.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
