Port information & tips for Taha'a Island

Taha'a, the enchanting "Vanilla Island" of French Polynesia, welcomes travelers in the midst of the Society Islands with the captivating scent of exotic orchids and an unspoiled South Sea idyll. Thanks to its remoteness, the island preserves a particularly authentic charm and impresses with emerald green hills as well as a crystal-clear lagoon, which is counted among the most beautiful in the region. Highlights include a visit to the traditional "Maison de la Vanille", exploring the fascinating "Champon Pearl Farm", and snorkeling in the world-famous coral garden at Motu Tautau. Since Taha'a does not have a deep-water port, guests reach the mainland comfortably by tender boat at the Patio Tender Pier in the main town of the same name. From the pier, the charming village center and local markets are just a few steps away, while excursions to the plantations start directly at the pier.

Returning to the ship

The island of Taha'a, known as the Vanilla Island of French Polynesia, does not have its own airport and is therefore traditionally reached via "Fly & Cruise" through the neighboring island of Raiatea. Cruise ships usually tender at Patio Pier or use private motus, while the journey for guests from the DACH region requires careful planning due to the long flight times.

Airplane

The journey from the DACH region initially leads via long-haul flights, for example with Air France or Air Tahiti Nui, to Faa'a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete on Tahiti. From there, you continue with a domestic flight on Air Tahiti to Raiatea Airport (RFP), which serves both islands and takes about 45 minutes of flight time. Raiatea Airport is located in the north of the island, only about a 10-minute drive from the main town of Uturoa.

Island Transfer

Since Taha'a has no airport, the transfer from Raiatea is exclusively by boat. From Raiatea Airport, you can easily reach the pier in Uturoa by taxi (approx. 10 minutes), from where public shuttle boats or water taxis depart for Taha'a. The crossing to the Vanilla Island takes between 15 and 70 minutes, depending on your destination on Taha'a, for example, 15 minutes to Vaitoare or 30 minutes to Haamene. Many hotels and resorts on Taha'a also offer their own, often comfortable shuttle services directly from Raiatea Airport.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long intercontinental flight times and the required domestic flights to Raiatea, an overnight stay in Papeete on Tahiti or directly on Raiatea before embarkation is highly recommended. This allows for a relaxed arrival to overcome jet lag and also offers the opportunity to gather first impressions of the Polynesian island world before reaching your cruise ship.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.

A visit offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire a high-quality keepsake thanks to the warm hospitality of the operators and is easily accessible by boat from the harbor.

Useful tips

The Coral Garden at Motu Tau Tau

The beautiful coral garden at Motu Tau Tau is easily accessible by a short boat transfer in about fifteen minutes and offers an incomparable snorkeling experience in crystal-clear water. Thanks to the gentle current, you can drift relaxingly over the intact underwater world and admire a vibrant variety of tropical fish and rare corals. The adjacent fine sandy beaches of the motu create a perfect backdrop for relaxing breaks under palm trees and captivate with their exclusive, quiet atmosphere. Ideally, start your excursion early in the morning to enjoy the best visibility underwater, and plan your return to the tender at least one hour before departure to end the day in a relaxed manner.

Returning to the ship

The way back to your ship on Taha'a is very relaxed and safe thanks to the well-organized tender connections from Tapuamu or Patio.

Tender boats and water taxis

The ship's own tender boats take you from the main pier in Tapuamu back to the cruise ship in the lagoon at short intervals. Since many excursions by boat end directly at these central piers, switching to the tender boats usually happens without waiting time and enables a punctual return.

Taxi and shuttle transfers

Private taxis are rare on Taha'a and are ideally reserved in advance via accommodations or excursion leaders to get safely to the port pier. The local providers coordinate the return trips directly to the Quai of Tapuamu, so that you can reach your ship's berth comfortably and without time pressure.

On foot

From the direct town center in Tapuamu or Patio, you can easily walk back to the port pier in a few minutes. The paths are flat and, thanks to the location by the water, orientation is uncomplicated at all times, allowing you a peaceful conclusion to your shore excursion.
