Returning to the ship

Niigata is a major Japanese port on the west coast of Honshū and impresses with its excellent connections to the high-speed rail network as well as its proximity to the regional airport. Depending on their size, cruise ships dock either at the city-center West Port at Yamanoshita Pier or at the East Port, located around 20 kilometers away, with both locations offering organized shuttle services.

Train

Niigata Station forms the northern terminus of the Joetsu Shinkansen line and allows for a comfortable journey from Tokyo in around 100 minutes. From the station, you can reach the Yamanoshita Pier in West Port within 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or a local line 17 bus, while special cruise line shuttles are usually available directly from the station forecourt for the more distant East Port.

Airplane

Niigata Airport (KIJ) is located about seven kilometers northeast of the West Port and is primarily served via the hubs of Tokyo-Narita or Seoul-Incheon, which allows travelers from the DACH region a comfortable journey with only one stopover. From the terminal, you can reach the ship in about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or limousine bus thanks to short distances; additionally, a pre-cruise overnight stay in one of the city hotels on the Bandai River is recommended due to the time difference.

Car & Parking

Arrival by rental car is via the major highways Kan-etsu Expressway (E17) from the direction of Tokyo or the Hokuriku Expressway (E8) along the coast. Guarded parking garages and long-term parking spaces are available at the Yamanoshita Terminal as well as near the adjacent Toki Messe convention center, offering a secure parking option during the entire cruise thanks to fair daily rates of around 1,500 Yen.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
