Returning to the ship
Kunta Kinteh Island in Gambia is not a classic cruise port for large ships, but rather a significant UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Gambia River, typically visited as part of "Roots" tours or smaller river cruises. Arrival for guests from the DACH region is primarily via Banjul International Airport, followed by a transfer to the starting point of the tours, usually near Banjul or the villages of Juffureh/Albreda.
Airplane
Banjul International Airport (BJL), also known as Yundum, is the nearest international airport and is located about 22 km south of the coastal regions and around 27 km from Kunta Kinteh Island. Direct flights from the DACH region are rare, so connections via European hubs or African hubs are often necessary. A flight time of 6-8 hours should be expected.
Transfer to the starting point of the tour
From Banjul International Airport (BJL), you can easily reach your accommodation or the starting point of your tour by taxi or pre-booked transfer. Many hotels offer a 24-hour shuttle service. The drive to coastal resorts like Kololi takes about 30-60 minutes depending on traffic. From Banjul or the villages of Juffureh and Albreda, located on the north bank of the Gambia River, smaller boats (pirogues or tour boats) then start for Kunta Kinteh Island. These places are reachable by ferry from Banjul to Barra and then by vehicle or directly by river boat.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Travel Planning
Given the long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Banjul or the surrounding coastal towns is recommended to start your Gambia experience relaxed. Kunta Kinteh Island is mostly visited as part of organized full-day tours, which often include the transfer from your hotel, the ferry crossing (if necessary), and the boat trip to the island. There are no direct "terminals" on Kunta Kinteh Island itself, but there is a newer visitor pier for tour boats. The tours offer a deep exploration of the history of the island and its surroundings.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
