Port information & tips for Tromsø
Tromsø, the glamorous "Gateway to the Arctic," welcomes travelers as Norway's northernmost major city with a unique blend of untouched nature and urban lifestyle. The city impresses with its spectacular location amidst majestic fjords and offers an incomparable atmosphere thanks to its vibrant culture. Absolute highlights include the iconic Arctic Cathedral with its modern architecture, the Polaria experience center, and the Fjellheisen cable car, which offers a wide view over the Arctic metropolis. Larger cruise ships dock at the Breivika terminal, from which the city center, about four kilometers away, is easily accessible by shuttle bus; additionally, smaller ships often dock directly at the central Prostneset terminal in the heart of the action.
Tromsø is the vibrant gateway to the Arctic and, thanks to its modern infrastructure, an excellently accessible starting point for Northern Norway cruises. Depending on the size of the ship, guests dock either at the central Prostneset terminal in the heart of the city or at the Breivika port located about four kilometers to the north.
Airplane
Tromsø Airport (TOS) is located only about five kilometers from the terminals and is regularly served from major hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, or Zurich. Thanks to the short distance, you can reach the city center or your berth comfortably in about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or the official airport shuttle bus, Flybussen.
Transfer & Shuttle
From the airport, the city bus line 42 offers a direct connection to the Breivika cruise terminal, while the central berths in Prostneset are ideally integrated into the city center's transport network. Many cruise lines also provide their own shuttle services, which take guests from central meeting points directly to the gangway, ensuring a smooth start to their holiday.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
As the weather in the Arctic can be changeable, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation and staying in one of the numerous hotels in the city center. This provides security in the event of flight delays and also allows you to visit local highlights such as the Arctic Cathedral or take a trip on the Fjellheisen cable car before official departure.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled for about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.

The port of Tromsø offers excellent connections depending on the berth and allows you to discover the Gateway to the Arctic in a very relaxed way.
On Foot
If your ship docks at the central Prostneset terminal, you are right in the heart of the city and can reach sights and cafes in just a few minutes. For a berth in Breivika, which is about four kilometers away, a beautiful coastal path leads to the center in around 45 to 60 minutes and also offers wonderful views of the Arctic Ocean.
City Buses
The modern buses of the provider Troms fylkestrafikk connect the more distant berths regularly and reliably with the city center. Lines 24 and 42 provide a fast connection from Breivika and, thanks to simple ticket apps or contactless payment, enable an uncomplicated journey to all important stations.
Taxi
Official taxi ranks can be found directly at the arrival areas of the terminals as well as at well-marked spots in the city center. Taxis are available for individual trips and will bring you comfortably to the famous Arctic Cathedral or directly to the valley station of the Fjellheisen cable car for a panoramic view over the region.
To make the most of your limited time in the gateway to the Arctic, we recommend a combination of the charming city center and the striking landmarks on the opposite side of the fjord.
Tromsø Sentrum
The historic old town with its colorful wooden houses and the busy shopping street Storgata is located directly at the harbor and invites you to stroll through cozy cafes and small boutiques. In addition, museums such as Polaria offer exciting insights into Arctic wildlife and are easily accessible on foot from the ship.
Arctic Cathedral
This architectural landmark is visible from afar thanks to its striking white triangular shape and impresses visitors with its vibrant glass mosaics. Its location at the end of the Tromsøbrua also offers a fantastic photo spot with views over the harbor and the surrounding islands.
Telegrafbukta
The popular city beach in the south of the island is an ideal destination for nature lovers, reachable by a short bus ride or a coastal walk. Here, guests can enjoy the fresh sea air and an expansive view of the snow-capped peaks, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed shore excursion in the countryside.
Fjellheisen & Berg Storsteinen
The valley station of the Fjellheisen cable car is easily accessible from the city center in just ten minutes by bus or taxi and takes you in a few minutes to the 421-meter-high summit of Storsteinen. From the spacious viewing platform, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Arctic city of Tromsø, the surrounding fjords, and your cruise ship. Thanks to the cozy café "Fjellstua," the summit also offers the perfect place for a relaxing break with local specialties at a airy height. Ideally, visit the mountain directly after arrival in the morning to savor the clear view before the main visiting times and to be back in the city center relaxed and on time before departure.
The return journey to your berth in the Arctic city is very comfortable thanks to the excellent infrastructure and the clear layout of the city and port.
Taxi and City Buses
Central taxi ranks are located directly at Roald Amundsens plass by the cathedral and in front of the Radisson Blu Hotel, so you can easily find a vehicle at any time. If your ship is docked at the Breivika terminal, located slightly to the north, bus lines 42 and 24 from the Sjøgata S3 stop will take you directly back to the port area within a few minutes.
Shuttle Service of the Cruise Lines
For berths in Breivika, the cruise lines usually organize a regular shuttle bus service that picks you up from the central Prostneset terminal. This service is ideally timed with departure times and ensures a punctual arrival directly at your ship's security checkpoint.
