Foynes, located on the picturesque Shannon Estuary, is a deep-water port that welcomes smaller luxury and expedition cruise ships. Although the port area is primarily used for cargo handling and does not have dedicated passenger terminals, the berths are within walking distance of the charming village center. Cruise lines often organize shuttle services from the piers to the famous Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum or the nearby city of Limerick to ensure convenient access for passengers.

Airplane

The nearest international airport is Shannon Airport (SNN), located approximately 58 kilometers from Foynes. The travel time under normal conditions is around 45 to 50 minutes. For a relaxed arrival from the DACH region, especially on long-haul flights, we recommend staying overnight near the airport or in Limerick the day before embarkation.

Transfer & Shuttle

You can easily reach Foynes from Shannon Airport (SNN) by taxi or private transfer, with costs ranging between 80 € and 180 €. There is no direct public bus connection from Shannon Airport to Foynes; instead, a transfer at Limerick Colbert station is required, which extends the travel time to approximately 2 hours 44 minutes to 3 hours 23 minutes. However, most cruise lines provide comfortable shuttle services that take you directly from the piers to local attractions such as the Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum or further into Limerick.

Auto

Foynes is accessible via the N69 national road, which runs directly through the village and offers good connectivity. From Limerick, follow the N69 for about 30 minutes. A planned improvement of the N69 between Foynes and Limerick will further optimize travel in the future and strengthen the connection to the national motorway network. Since the Port of Foynes is primarily a cargo port, there are no dedicated public long-term parking spaces for cruise passengers at the terminal. It is therefore advisable to clarify parking options directly with the cruise line in advance or to use local providers. There is currently no direct passenger rail connection to Foynes; the nearest major train station is Limerick Colbert.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
