Returning to the ship

Fakarava, a breathtaking UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in French Polynesia, is a classic Fly & Cruise destination typically reached by international guests following a domestic flight from Tahiti. Cruise ships anchor in the picturesque lagoon, from where passengers can easily reach the small pier in the main village of Rotoava by tender boat.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region is primarily via long-haul flight to Faa'a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete on Tahiti. From there, a domestic flight with a local airline such as Air Tahiti or Air Moana takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes to reach Fakarava Airport (FAV) directly. The distance is roughly 375 to 488 kilometers. Early booking of domestic flights is strongly recommended as capacities can be limited.

Transfer on Fakarava

Fakarava Airport (FAV) is located on the main island but away from the center of Rotoava. There is no public shuttle service; instead, most accommodations and cruise lines organize a suitable transfer from the airport to your respective destination or to the tender pier in the village. The tender pier in Rotoava is ideally situated, allowing you to reach shops and local providers comfortably on foot.

Pre-Cruise Hotel & Travel Planning

Due to the long international journey, we recommend staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel on Tahiti. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise vacation and provides a buffer for potential flight delays before you continue your journey to Fakarava. Careful planning is the key to a smooth travel experience for this remote, paradisiacal destination.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents will usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.

Getting around

Arrival in Fakarava is by tender boat directly in the charming village of Rotoava, from where you can comfortably and directly explore the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

On Foot

The main village of Rotoava can be wonderfully discovered on foot, as most sights and small handicraft shops are located directly along the coastal main road. A relaxed stroll to the white coral church or to the local cafes takes only a few minutes and offers constant views of the lagoon.

Bicycle

Bicycles are the ideal means of transportation on the atoll and can be rented from providers directly near the landing pier. Thanks to the flat nature of the island, you can reach even more remote sections of the coast in a short time and also enjoy the refreshing sea breeze during the ride.

Water Taxi and Boats

For trips to the uninhabited motus or the famous snorkeling grounds at Garuae Pass, local excursion boats are available at the pier. These allow for convenient onward travel to the hidden natural treasures of the lagoon and simultaneously offer a first-class perspective of the crystal-clear water of the Tuamotu Islands.

Highlights & Districts

To experience the pristine beauty of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Fakarava at its best, we recommend focusing on the dreamlike coastal sections and the fascinating underwater world in the direct vicinity of the main village, Rotoava.

Rotoava

The island's charming main village can be ideally explored on foot or by bicycle and impresses with its relaxed Polynesian atmosphere as well as local pearl boutiques and the historic Topaka coral church.

PK9 Beach

This paradisiacal stretch of beach is considered one of the most beautiful in the Tuamotu Islands and, thanks to a short drive along the scenic coastal road, is perfect for a relaxing day under coconut palms by the turquoise water.

Garuae Pass

As the largest ship pass in French Polynesia, this natural wonder offers spectacular insights into an intact coral ecosystem and, thanks to its location in the north of the atoll, is a first-class destination for unforgettable snorkeling excursions amidst a colorful variety of marine life.

Useful tips

Plage du PK9

The paradise-like Plage du PK9 is located about nine kilometers north of the village of Rotoava and is easily accessible by rental bike or a local water taxi. This spot offers the finest white sand as well as crystal-clear water and is considered one of the most pristine places in the Tuamotu Islands thanks to its location within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The atmosphere under the shade-giving palms is ideal for a relaxed swim in the Pacific and also invites you to go snorkeling in the colorful lagoon. It is best to set off early in the morning to enjoy the undisturbed idyll and plan your return to the ship about ninety minutes before departure.

Returning to the ship

The return trip to the Quai de Rotoava is very relaxed and safe thanks to the manageable size of the atoll. Since the cruise ships anchor in the lagoon, you can easily reach your ship using the regularly operating tender boats from the central pier in the main village of Rotoava.

Rental Bicycles and Scooters

Bicycles are the most common means of transport on Fakarava and can easily be returned to the rental stations directly at the port or in the village of Rotoava after exploring the atoll. Thanks to the flat and only paved main road, you will find your way back to the pier without any problems at any time and can flexibly coordinate the return time with your schedule.

On Foot Through Rotoava

From the village center, the striking coral church, or the nearby snack bars, you can walk back to the tender pier via the main road in less than ten minutes. Orientation is remarkably easy, and the path leads you safely along the picturesque coastline directly to the guarded pier, where the crew will receive you for the return trip to the ship.

Boat Transfers and Organized Tours

If you have visited more remote locations such as the South Pass or the Blue Lagoon with a local provider, these boats dock directly at the Quai de Rotoava. The local captains are well acquainted with the cruise ships' port times and coordinate the return so that you reach your tender boat on time and without haste.
