Returning to the ship

River cruises on the Douro usually start in Porto or, more specifically, in the opposite Vila Nova de Gaia. The berths at the picturesque Cais de Gaia offer an excellent view of Porto's historic skyline and promise an atmospheric start to your journey. For guests from the DACH region, arrival with a pre-cruise overnight stay in a hotel is highly recommended due to the flight time, in order to start the holiday in a relaxed manner.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Porto Airport (OPO), also known as Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, which is located about 12 to 13 kilometers from the embarkation points in Vila Nova de Gaia. Numerous airlines offer convenient direct or connecting flights from the DACH region. From the airport, you can reach your ship or pre-cruise hotel comfortably in about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic, by taxi or pre-booked private transfer. Alternatively, Metro line E (purple) takes you to Porto city center in around 35 minutes, from where further public transport is available.

Train

Two main train stations serve Porto for rail travel: Campanhã for long-distance trains, for example from Lisbon, and the more centrally located São Bento station for regional connections. Long-distance tickets to Campanhã often include free onward travel on the suburban train to São Bento, which runs regularly and provides a convenient connection to the city center. From São Bento, you can reach the Cais de Gaia in Vila Nova de Gaia, a central mooring point, quickly by metro (e.g. line D to General Torres) in about 6 minutes, by bus in about 7 minutes or by taxi in around 6 minutes. Private transfer services are also available from both stations directly to hotels in Gaia.

Car

Porto is excellently connected to the Portuguese motorway network. Important routes leading into the city are the A1 from the south, the A3 from the north and the A4 from the east, which provides a connection towards Spain. Please note that tolls apply on most Portuguese motorways, which are also collected via electronic systems. For parking near the embarkation areas in Vila Nova de Gaia, there are car parks such as "Parking Cais de Gaia" which offer short-term parking. For longer cruises, it is advisable to research and book special long-term parking or hotel parking options in advance.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents will usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
