Angra do Heroísmo is the magnificent historical capital of the island of Terceira and a shining jewel in the middle of the Atlantic. The UNESCO World Heritage city impresses with its colorful Renaissance architecture, charming cobblestone streets, and a picturesque bay. Cultural highlights include the imposing Sé Catedral, the botanical Jardim Duque da Terceira, and the volcanic Monte Brasil, which offers a spectacular panoramic view thanks to its location. Smaller cruise ships dock directly at the historical Porto de Pipas in the city center, while larger ships moor at the Porto da Praia da Vitória. From there, the old town is easily and directly accessible thanks to short transfer times of around twenty minutes.
Arriving at Angra do Heroismo on Terceira, Azores, is straightforward thanks to the nearby airport and manageable distances on the island. Porto de Angra is a compact port located directly in the city center, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Lajes Field (TER), located approximately 19.5 kilometers (approx. 12 miles) from Angra do Heroismo. When traveling from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, the journey usually includes a layover, for example in Lisbon (LIS). The flight time from there is about 2.5 hours.
Transfer to the Port
You can easily reach the port from Lajes Airport (TER). A taxi ride takes about 17 to 25 minutes and costs around 25 to 35 euros. Alternatively, Mobi Azores offers a direct bus connection (line Ca5) to Angra - Bailão (near the city center and port), which takes about 48 to 52 minutes and costs between 3 and 5 euros. Additionally, rental cars and private transfer services are available at the airport to take you directly to your destination.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the international travel, especially to an island in the Atlantic, we recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise while giving you the opportunity to explore the charming UNESCO World Heritage site of Angra do Heroismo in advance. Many hotels in Angra do Heroismo also offer free parking.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
