Port information & tips for Kinderdijk
Kinderdijk is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered one of the most iconic postcard motifs in the Netherlands. The picturesque polder landscape impresses with its idyllic tranquility and the impressive engineering of past centuries, which stands here in perfect harmony with nature. Visitors can marvel at the famous 19 historic windmills, explore the authentic Nederwaard Museum Mill, and also visit the Wisboom Pumping Station, which offers exciting insights into traditional water management. Cruise ships dock directly at the central Kinderdijk Cruise Pier, located right at the entrance to the windmill park, so that the main attractions and the visitor center can be reached comfortably within a few minutes' walk thanks to the prime location.
Kinderdijk is a world-famous UNESCO World Heritage site with windmills, but it does not function as a traditional cruise port with large terminals for ocean-going cruises. Instead, it is a popular stop for river cruises, where passengers often embark or disembark in nearby cities such as Rotterdam or Dordrecht, or visit Kinderdijk as a shore excursion. River cruise ships dock directly along the waterways in the windmill area.
Car
Kinderdijk is easily accessible via the A15 motorway, Alblasserdam exit. From there, follow the signs to the transferium in Alblasserdam (address: Kabelbaan 1, 2952 BS Alblasserdam). During the high season (March 16 to November 1), parking directly at the windmill area is not permitted; visitors must use the transferium in Alblasserdam. A parking ticket for approximately €9.75 per car is often available in combination with an entrance ticket for Kinderdijk and includes a shuttle bus to the entrance of the windmill area. Outside the high season, you can park directly at the entrance (Nederwaard 1, Kinderdijk). A drive from Rotterdam takes about 25 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic.
Train
The nearest major train stations are Rotterdam Centraal and Dordrecht Centraal. From Rotterdam Centraal, the most convenient way to reach Kinderdijk is by Waterbus. Take the WaterShuttle line from Willemskade in Rotterdam, which takes you directly to Kinderdijk in about 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can take Waterbus line 20 from Rotterdam or Dordrecht and change to the small "Driehoeksveer" ferry at the "De Schans" stop in Ridderkerk. From Dordrecht Centraal, there are also direct bus connections, for example, with line 416 to Alblasserdam, Vogelbuurt, where you can change to line 489 to Kinderdijk.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM), located about 15 to 20 kilometers from Kinderdijk. The fastest way to arrive from RTM is by taxi or rental car, where the journey can be combined with a car ferry and takes about 31 minutes. Alternatively, you can use public transport: take bus 33 to Rotterdam Centraal station and from there the Waterbus to Kinderdijk. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) is about 48 kilometers away. From Schiphol, the best way to reach Kinderdijk is by train to Dordrecht or Rotterdam Centraal and then by the public transport mentioned above or a private transfer. Due to the longer journey, an overnight stay in Rotterdam is often recommended for air travel, where numerous hotels are available near the river cruise terminal.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
