Port information & tips for Deventer

Deventer is one of the oldest and most charming Hanseatic cities in the Netherlands, picturesquely situated right on the banks of the IJssel. The city impresses with its medieval backdrop of cobblestone streets, grand merchant houses, and a vibrant cultural scene that harmoniously combines tradition and modernity. Among the most significant highlights are the imposing Lebuinuskerk with its distinctive tower, the spacious Brink market square, and the historic Museum De Waag in the heart of the old town. River cruise ships dock directly at the central Welle pier, which is located right outside the gates of the city center. Thanks to this prime location, the main attractions can be easily explored on foot while enjoying a fantastic view of the flowing IJssel.

Deventer, a charming Hanseatic city on the IJssel, is easily accessible for river cruise passengers from the DACH region thanks to good transport connections by car, train, and plane. The berths for river cruises are usually located close to the center, allowing short distances into the historic old town.

Car

Traveling to Deventer by car is convenient via the Dutch A1 motorway, which passes directly by the city and represents an important east-west connection from Amsterdam to the German border. Coming from Germany, you can reach Deventer, for example, via the A30, which seamlessly merges into the Dutch A1. Various parking options are available in the city center, including the "Centrum Garage" or the "Parkeergarage Brink", which offer good connections to the city center and the river piers. In addition, there are parking lots such as "Parkeerterrein Melksterweide" on the other side of the IJssel, which often allow free parking and are connected by a short ferry crossing.

Train

Deventer railway station (Deventer Centraal) is a central hub in the regional and national rail network and is even served by the cross-border Intercity Berlin-Amsterdam. From there, you can easily reach the river cruise berths and the city center on foot in about five minutes or by local buses. This allows for a relaxed journey without a vehicle directly into the heart of the city.

Plane

The nearest major international airport is Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), located around 95.5 kilometers from Deventer. From Schiphol, there is an excellent train connection to Deventer, which takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to 1 hour and 27 minutes depending on the connection and transfer (often at Amersfoort Centraal) and costs between €11 and €28. Alternatively, taxis or private transfer services can be used to cover the 117-kilometer route in about 1 hour and 21 minutes. For a particularly relaxed embarkation, especially after longer flights, arriving the day before is recommended.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
