Port information & tips for Delfzijl

Delfzijl is a charming maritime gateway to the North Sea, idyllically located at the mouth of the Ems in the north of the Netherlands. The port city delights with its authentic coastal atmosphere, wide dike landscapes, and relaxed hospitality. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the fascinating Muzeeaquarium Delfzijl with its impressive collection, as well as the historic Adam windmill, which offers a wonderful view. In addition, the modern city beach invites you to linger right by the water. Cruise ships dock at the central Handelskade, from where the city center and the inviting pedestrian zone are easily accessible in just a few minutes' walk, allowing for a perfect and uncomplicated stay in this tradition-rich port city.

Delfzijl is a significant port in the Dutch province of Groningen, serving cargo as well as river and smaller ocean cruises, and is an attractive starting point for exploring the city of Groningen. Passenger embarkation mainly takes place at Handelskade West.

Car

Thanks to good connections to the Dutch road network, Delfzijl is easily accessible by car. From the DACH region, you can reach the Groningen region directly via motorways such as the German A31, which merges into the Dutch N33 and later the A7. The port area at Handelskade West, where the passenger piers are located, is well signposted and offers immediate parking directly at the pier, with sufficient space even for larger vehicles.

Train

Delfzijl station is the relevant arrival point for train travelers and is located in direct proximity to the port. From there, you can reach the terminal effortlessly, often even on foot, or use a short transfer. There are regular train connections from Groningen, the provincial capital, with a travel time of around 33 minutes. Those traveling from the DACH region can, for example, use a comfortable train connection from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) via Groningen, which takes about 3 hours and 12 minutes.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ), approximately 49 kilometers from Delfzijl. From GRQ, convenient transfer options such as taxis, minibuses, and buses are available to take you directly to the cruise terminal. Alternatively, the larger Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) offers a wider selection of international flights and is excellently connected to Delfzijl thanks to the good train connection via Groningen.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
