Tournus is a picturesque gem in the heart of Burgundy and, as a major stop on the Saône, captivates with its deeply rooted historical charm. The small town enchants visitors with an idyllic riverside promenade as well as an authentic French way of life amidst rolling vineyards and world-class gastronomy. Cultural highlights include the impressive Saint-Philibert Abbey, a globally esteemed masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, as well as the fascinating Hôtel-Dieu with its magnificent historic apothecary. River cruise ships dock directly at the centrally located Quai du Midi, from where the winding old town and all major sights can be easily explored on foot in just a few minutes thanks to the prime location.
The tranquil port of Tournus, idyllically situated on the Saône, is primarily a port of call for river cruises and can be easily reached from the DACH region thanks to good transport connections. Since it is a river port, there is usually a central mooring area without extensive terminal structures.
Car
Tournus is excellently connected to the French motorway network. The Autoroute A6 (Autoroute du Soleil) passes directly by Tournus, with its own exit (Exit 27, Tournus). Arrival is therefore straightforward. In Tournus itself, there are public parking options, often close to the moorings. For longer cruises, it is recommended to check the exact parking options with the respective cruise line or local providers in advance.
Train
Tournus train station is centrally located and easily accessible. Trains from Paris (Gare de Lyon) via Dijon and Lyon stop here, enabling a comfortable journey by TGV and a transfer to regional trains. From larger cities in the DACH region, you can reach Tournus via Paris or Lyon. From the station, the moorings are usually within walking distance of just a few minutes or reachable via a short taxi transfer.
Airplane
The nearest major airport is Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS), located around 120 kilometres south of Tournus. There are good train connections from Lyon to Tournus, with the journey taking about 1 to 1.5 hours. Alternatively, Geneva Airport (GVA) is an option, albeit with a longer journey of around 170 kilometres. For a relaxed arrival, we recommend booking a transfer through the cruise line or taking a taxi/rental car from the airport to get directly to the moorings in Tournus. Arriving the day before with an overnight stay in Lyon or Tournus can be sensible for late flights or a stress-free embarkation.
Check-in & Embarkation
