Port information & tips for Cherbourg
Cherbourg welcomes its guests as a proud maritime gateway to Normandy and impresses with its deep blue harbor basin as well as the historic charm of a significant port city. The atmosphere is characterized by elegant Art Deco architecture and vast views of the English Channel, while cozy cafés on the quay invite you to relax. Directly at the harbor, the "Cité de la Mer" fascinates with the imposing submarine Le Redoutable, and the picturesque Parc Emmanuel Liais also offers a green oasis of peace. Cruise ships dock at the historic Quai de France at the Gare Maritime Transatlantique, from where the lively city center is easily reachable thanks to a short, approximately ten-minute walk or convenient shuttle connections.
Cherbourg-en-Cotentin at the tip of the Cotentin peninsula is a cruise port steeped in history, welcoming guests in the magnificent Art Deco terminal of the Gare Maritime Transatlantique. The facility is located close to the city center and, thanks to Normandy's well-developed infrastructure, is easily accessible for travelers from the DACH region.
Car
Arrival by private car from Germany or Switzerland usually takes place via Paris or Amiens and leads via the A13 freeway to Caen. From there, the well-developed N13 national road leads directly to Cherbourg, where the cruise terminal and the Cité de la Mer are clearly signposted. Both free short-term parking and secure long-term parking for cruise guests are available directly at the harbor and in the immediate vicinity of the terminal.
Train
The Gare de Cherbourg railway station is an important terminus for Intercité trains from Paris and offers travelers a direct and relaxed connection from the Paris-Saint-Lazare station in about three hours. From the station, you can easily reach the cruise terminal within a few minutes by taxi or use bus line 8, which offers a direct connection to the port. For guests traveling with light luggage, the terminal is also directly accessible via an approximately 20-minute walk along the harbor promenade.
Airplane
For international guests from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, a flight to the Parisian airports Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY) is recommended, which have excellent worldwide connections. From Paris, onward travel by rental car or train is possible in around three to four hours, whereby an overnight stay in one of the charming hotels in Cherbourg is recommended due to the travel time. Alternatively, the regional airport Caen-Carpiquet (CFR) is only about 120 kilometers away and offers seasonal connections within France.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
