Port information & tips for Ajaccio (Corsica)
Ajaccio is the sun-drenched capital of Corsica and welcomes visitors with Mediterranean charm and the historical heritage of Napoleon Bonaparte. The city is picturesquely situated in a deep blue bay and captivates with a combination of pastel-colored houses, narrow old town streets, and a lively harbor atmosphere. Famous sights such as Napoleon's birthplace, the Maison Bonaparte, the impressive citadel, and the bustling Place Foch with its colorful market are located in the immediate vicinity. Cruise ships dock centrally at the Gare Maritime d’Ajaccio on Quai l’Herminier, allowing guests to easily reach the historic center as well as cozy cafés and boutiques within a few minutes' walk thanks to the prime location.
The Port of Ajaccio is located right in the charming city center and offers excellent accessibility for guests from the DACH region. Thanks to the direct proximity of the Gare Maritime to the old town, travelers enjoy short distances and a straightforward embarkation right at the heart of the Corsican island capital.
Airplane
Ajaccio Napoléon Bonaparte Airport (AJA) is located only about seven kilometers east of the port and is regularly served during the cruise season with direct flights or via Paris, Nice, and Marseille from cities such as Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, or Zurich. From there, you can easily reach the cruise terminal by taxi in about 15 to 20 minutes or use bus line 8, which connects the airport directly with the city center and the port area.
Ferry & Car
Travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland often choose to arrive with their own car via the motorways towards Southern France or Italy, to cross over by ferry to Ajaccio from ports such as Nice, Toulon, or Livorno. Once in Ajaccio, the well-developed T20 and T21 main roads lead directly to the port area, where guarded long-term parking such as the Diamant parking garage or spaces at Quai l'Herminier offer a secure parking option for the duration of the cruise.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the idyllic location of the port right next to the historic old town, an overnight stay in one of the central hotels is recommended to enjoy the Mediterranean flair even before departure. Many accommodations are located within comfortable walking distance of the terminal; furthermore, arriving the day before allows for a particularly relaxed start without time pressure from flight or ferry schedules.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your arrival at the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
