The primary starting point for cruises in the Arctic region of Svalbard is Longyearbyen, the largest settlement on Spitsbergen and the world's northernmost public airport receiving regular scheduled flights.
Airplane
Travel from the DACH region typically takes place by plane via Norway. The nearest airport is Longyearbyen Airport (LYR), which does not offer direct international flights. Travelers usually have to change in Oslo (OSL) or Tromsø (TOS) in Norway. The flight time from Oslo to Longyearbyen is approximately 3.5 hours. Due to midnight arrival times and the remote location, it is recommended to arrive at least one day before embarkation to start your Arctic adventure in a relaxed manner.
Transfer & Shuttle
Various transfer options are available from Longyearbyen Airport (LYR), which is located only about 5 to 7 kilometers from the city center and the cruise port. The transfer usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. An airport bus (Flybussen) operates after every regular flight arrival and serves most hotels in Longyearbyen. A single journey costs about 100 to 110 NOK. Alternatively, taxis are available, although advance reservation is recommended as numbers are limited. A taxi ride costs around 200 to 250 NOK. Many cruise lines also offer their own transfer services, and numerous hotels in Longyearbyen provide free shuttles to the airport and port.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
An overnight stay in Longyearbyen before the start of your cruise is strongly recommended due to the often late arrival times of flights and for acclimatization to the Arctic environment. This gives you the opportunity to explore the unique northernmost settlement in the world before going on board. Many hotels in Longyearbyen offer practical packages that include not only the overnight stay but also transfers to the airport and directly to the cruise terminal. There are no long-term parking facilities at the port, so these hotel offers are a comfortable alternative.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
