Palanderbukta is a spectacular bay on the island of Nordaustlandet and embodies the untouched, Arctic wilderness of Svalbard in its purest form. Palanderbukta is a remote bay in Svalbard that serves as a fascinating destination during an expedition cruise, but does not function as an embarkation port. Most cruises in the region begin and end in nearby Longyearbyen, the main settlement of Svalbard, which is considered the northernmost civil flight destination in the world. An arrival one day before embarkation is strongly recommended due to long flight paths and Arctic conditions, to ensure a relaxed start to your adventure.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region to Longyearbyen (LYR) is exclusively by plane, as there are no road or rail connections to the mainland. Direct flights to Longyearbyen do not currently exist; instead, you can easily reach the island via Oslo (OSL) or, less frequently, via Tromsø (TOS). Airlines such as SAS and Norwegian offer regular connections from Oslo to Longyearbyen, with a flight time of approximately three hours. Lufthansa also offers connecting flights from Frankfurt (FRA).
Transfer in Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen Airport (LYR) is located only about 5 kilometers from the center of Longyearbyen and is quickly accessible thanks to reliable transfer options. The most convenient option is the airport bus ("Flybussen"), which operates according to flight times and serves most hotels in Longyearbyen. A journey takes about 10 to 15 minutes and costs approximately 100 NOK for a one-way trip. Alternatively, taxis are available, providing a direct ride to your accommodation or the cruise terminal for about 200 NOK. It is advisable to book taxis in advance, as they do not always wait directly at the port.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and the unique location of Svalbard, an overnight stay in Longyearbyen before your embarkation is strongly recommended. This provides a relaxed buffer for potential flight delays and the opportunity to explore the charming town before your cruise. Longyearbyen has various comfortable hotels and lodges, such as the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel, the Funken Lodge, or the Svalbard Hotel, many of them in central locations. Some cruise lines even include an overnight stay and the transfer from the hotel to the ship in the travel package.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
