Longyearbyen is the fascinating main town of Spitsbergen and is considered the gateway to the untouched Arctic. The northernmost city in the world delights with its dramatic location between rugged mountain peaks and deep blue fjords, while colorful wooden houses provide a charming contrast to the wild nature. Cultural highlights include the informative Svalbard Museum, the prominent Svalbard Church, and the exciting North Pole Expedition Museum. Cruise ships dock at the central Longyearbyen Bykaia berth, which offers ideal connections thanks to its location. The lively town center with its cozy cafes and small boutiques is quickly reached after a scenic walk of about 1.5 kilometers or by a short shuttle bus transfer.
Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen is the northernmost cruise port in the world and serves as the gateway to spectacular expeditions in the Arctic. Due to its isolated location in the Arctic Ocean, arrival is almost exclusively by air to the central port area, Bykaia.
Airplane
Svalbard Airport (LYR) is located only about five kilometers from the port and is regularly served from Oslo (OSL) and Tromsø (TOS) by SAS and Norwegian. Travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland reach the archipelago comfortably via the Oslo hub, with the pure flight time from the Norwegian capital being approximately three hours.
Transfer & Shuttle
After landing, you can reach the port or your accommodation within ten minutes by the waiting airport bus (Flybussen) or a taxi. The bus connections are precisely timed to the arriving scheduled flights and offer straightforward transportation to Pier Bykaia, where most cruise ships dock.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the exposed location and the weather dependency of Arctic flight schedules, arriving at least one day before embarkation is highly recommended. A stay in one of the hotels in Longyearbyen allows for a relaxed start to the cruise and also offers the opportunity to visit the Svalbard Museum or the northernmost brewery in the world in advance.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
