Port information & tips for Bockfjorden

Bockfjorden in the north of Spitsbergen is a spectacular natural paradise and an absolute highlight of any Arctic expedition. The untouched wilderness captivates with its surreal beauty, where reddish sandstone meets snow-capped peaks to create a fascinating atmosphere. Special highlights include the Jotun-Kildene and Troll-Kildene, the northernmost thermal springs in the world, as well as the striking, extinct volcano Sverrefjellet. Since there is no conventional pier in this protected wilderness area, expedition ships anchor directly in the deep blue fjord, while guests are safely transferred to the natural beach by zodiac. Located far from any settlements, Bockfjorden offers travelers the absolute silence of the Arctic and an authentic nature experience far away from classic city centers.

Bockfjorden on Svalbard is a breathtaking natural destination visited as part of expedition cruises. Travel for cruise guests from the DACH region is primarily via Longyearbyen Airport (LYR), as this is the starting point for most Svalbard cruises.

Airplane

The nearest airport is Longyearbyen Airport (LYR). There are generally no direct flights from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland to Longyearbyen; instead, you fly conveniently via Oslo (OSL) or Tromsø (TOS) in Norway. The flight time from Oslo to Longyearbyen is approximately three hours. Due to the long travel times and potential layovers, it is recommended to plan an overnight stay in Oslo or Longyearbyen before embarkation to start your Arctic adventure relaxed.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Longyearbyen Airport (LYR), you can quickly reach the center of Longyearbyen, which is about six kilometers away. The airport bus (Flybussen) is the most popular option and is synchronized with flight arrival times; it takes you directly to most hotels in Longyearbyen in about 10-15 minutes. In addition, taxis as well as private transfer and chauffeur services are available, providing a comfortable ride to your accommodation or the embarkation port.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

An overnight stay in Longyearbyen before embarkation is strongly recommended to avoid travel stress and buffer potential flight delays. In Longyearbyen, you will find various hotels and accommodations that form an ideal starting point for your cruise, including charming boutique hotels such as the Funken Lodge or the Basecamp Hotel. Many cruise lines also offer hotel stays as part of their travel packages. This allows you to explore the northernmost settlement in the world before your expedition begins.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.

Bockfjorden is a pristine expedition stop in northern Spitsbergen, offering direct access to the Arctic wilderness thanks to the ship's own boats.

Expedition Tenders & Zodiacs

Landing on the shore is safe and comfortable with the ship's own inflatable boats. These provide a direct nature experience and reliably take guests to the region's fascinating thermal springs and geological highlights.

On Foot

Exploration of the tundra takes place in accompanied groups and offers hikers the opportunity to experience the spectacular flora and fauna up close. Well-organized routes lead safely through the terrain and open up wide panoramic views over the untouched fjord landscape.

Shipboard Kayaks

For a particularly close-to-nature experience, kayaks are available on many expedition ships. These offer a silent way to move on the water while allowing an individual perspective of the passing icebergs and the impressive coastline.

To make the most of your visit to the pristine Bockfjorden, we recommend exploring the unique geological wonders and the spectacular glacial world right on the coast.

Jotunkjeldene

As the northernmost thermal springs in the world, the Jotun springs delight with their gently steaming pools of water and, thanks to the mineral-rich deposits, form a colorful oasis in the midst of the barren Arctic tundra.

Sverrefjellet

The striking, extinct volcano Sverrefjellet is a geological highlight of the region and, thanks to its exposed location, offers hikers breathtaking panoramic views over the vast fjord landscape and the adjacent inland ice.

Friedrichbreen

The majestic Friedrichbreen glacier flows impressively into the calm waters of the fjord and is also the ideal place for spectacular nature observations and unforgettable photo opportunities against the backdrop of eternal ice.

Jotunkildene

Bockfjorden is home to the Jotunkildene, one of Spitsbergen's most fascinating geological features, which is easily accessible from the coast after a short Zodiac ride and a light hike. These thermal springs offer an extraordinary natural experience in the heart of the Arctic wilderness and impress with their rare lime sinter terraces and vibrant green moss areas. Thanks to the secluded location, you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere and a wide panoramic view of the reddish rock formations of the extinct Sverrefjellet volcano here. Ideally, start your shore excursion with the first Zodiac group in the morning to enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the springs in peace, and plan your walk back to the landing site relaxed for the late afternoon.

The return journey to the ship in uninhabited Bockfjorden is exclusively via the ship's own landing craft, with safety in the Arctic wilderness always being the top priority.

Expedition Inflatable Boats (Zodiacs)

The return trip from the shore to your ship is ensured by regular Zodiac shuttle runs and is extremely efficient thanks to the experienced crew. These boats commute flexibly between the beach and the anchorage position, so you can return comfortably and directly on board at any time.

Marked Landing Sites

Since there are no roads or buildings in Bockfjorden, the clearly marked landing zones on the beach serve as central meeting points for all guests. Thanks to the constant radio link between the expedition team on land and the ship, a smooth transfer is guaranteed and you will easily find your way to the departure point.

Accompaniment by the Expedition Team

Due to the potential presence of polar bears, the return to the shore always takes place within the marked safety zones and under the supervision of armed guides. You walk back to the assembly point relaxed in a group and also enjoy the peace of mind that your team is coordinating the departure times for all passengers precisely.
