Port information & tips for Alkefjellet
Alkefjellet is one of Spitsbergen's most spectacular natural wonders and an essential highlight of any Arctic expedition in the Hinlopen Strait. The majestic basalt cliffs, rising vertically over 100 meters from the icy sea, create a dramatic backdrop characterized by untouched wilderness and an impressive soundscape. Here, visitors marvel at the massive colony of Brünnich's guillemots and, with a bit of luck, discover Arctic foxes or polar bears among the striking rock formations. As it is a protected nature reserve, ships anchor in the open sea at a designated anchorage without a fixed terminal. Exploration is flexible via Zodiac inflatable boats directly from the ship, providing guests with immediate access to this rugged world far from any urban centers.
To experience the impressive cliffs of Alkefjellet on Spitsbergen, your journey usually begins in the main town of Longyearbyen. As the world's northernmost cruise port, it serves as the central gateway to the Svalbard archipelago and offers good connections for international guests, mostly by plane.
Airplane
Svalbard Airport, Longyear (LYR), is the only airport in the archipelago and is located about 3 to 5 kilometers northwest of Longyearbyen. Direct flights to LYR are generally available from Oslo (OSL) and Tromsø (TOS) in Norway and are operated by SAS and Norwegian Air. Due to the long journey from the DACH region and the remote location, arriving at least one day before your planned embarkation is recommended to ensure a relaxed start to your Arctic adventure.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Svalbard Airport, Longyear (LYR), you can easily reach the cruise terminal and hotels by shuttle bus or taxi. The travel time is only about 10 to 20 minutes. An airport shuttle runs regularly and is coordinated with flight times; the cost is approximately 100 NOK for a one-way trip. Taxis are also available and cost around 200-250 NOK for the approximately 10-minute drive to the port or town. Many cruise lines also organize their own transfers from the airport directly to the ship, and numerous hotels in Longyearbyen offer free shuttle services. The main cruise pier, Bykaia, is located about 1.5 to 2 kilometers from the city center and features a port lounge with free Wi-Fi.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
An overnight stay in Longyearbyen before your cruise is highly recommended to avoid travel stress and buffer against potential flight delays. Numerous hotels in the city center offer comfortable accommodations, often including shuttle service to the airport and the port. This not only allows you a relaxed acclimatization to the Arctic environment but also the opportunity to explore the world's northernmost settlement before your embarkation. Plan your hotel booking early, as capacities are limited during peak season.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
