Vanikoro is a pristine natural paradise in the South Pacific and is considered one of the most mysterious destinations in the Solomon Islands. The mountainous island impresses with dense rainforests, emerald green lagoons, and a fascinating history surrounding the lost explorer La Pérouse. Impressive highlights include the historic La Pérouse monument on the coast, the species-rich coral reefs, and the authentic village of Peou with its warm culture. As the island has no industrial pier, ships use the protected anchorage in the lagoon and guests reach the landing site on the beach of Peou comfortably by zodiac or tender boat. Thanks to this direct connection, travelers arrive immediately in the village center and can enjoy the untouched wilderness as well as the local hospitality without any detours.
The island of Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands is an extremely remote destination and serves as an expedition cruise stop, but not as a port of departure for embarkation or disembarkation. There are no cruise terminals or tourist infrastructure on land. Access to the island is exclusively by Zodiac or ship's tender directly from your cruise ship.
Airplane
For guests from the DACH region, travel to Vanikoro is only possible by plane in combination with an expedition cruise. The primary international airport in the Solomon Islands is Honiara International Airport (HIR) on Guadalcanal. There are no direct flights from Germany to the Solomon Islands; travel usually requires several stopovers, for example via hubs in Asia, Australia, or New Zealand. Plan for a generous travel time due to long flight times and potential delays.
Onward Travel to Embarkation & Local Transfers
Since Vanikoro is not an embarkation port, you will first fly to the starting point of your expedition cruise, which is usually Honiara or another regional port. From there, you will reach Vanikoro by cruise ship. The island itself has no roads, taxis, or public transport. Landings are made using the ship's own Zodiacs or tenders at beaches or simple landing stages, and all explorations on land take place on foot, often as part of guided expeditions from your ship.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long and complex journey to the Solomon Islands, it is strongly recommended to plan at least one overnight stay in a hotel in Honiara (or the respective embarkation port) before your cruise begins. This allows for a relaxed start to the trip and minimizes the risk of missing the ship in the event of flight delays. In Honiara, you will find various hotels, including the Coral Sea Resort & Casino, the Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel, or the Heritage Park Hotel, which offer a pleasant stay before your onward journey.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
