Fort-de-France is the pulsating heart of Martinique and impresses as one of the most charming metropolises of the Lesser Antilles with its French flair and Caribbean joie de vivre. The city welcomes visitors with a picturesque backdrop of colonial architecture, colorful markets, and a lively waterfront promenade on the wide Bay of Flamands. Cultural jewels in the immediate vicinity include the ornate Bibliothèque Schoelcher, the impressive Cathédrale Saint-Louis, and the historic Fort Saint-Louis. Cruise ships usually dock at the central Pointe Simon Cruise Terminal, from which the city center and the La Savane park are reachable in just a few minutes' walk; ships also use the Quai des Tourelles, which, thanks to short transfer routes, also allows quick access to the center.
The port of Fort-de-France is the maritime gateway to the island of Martinique and welcomes travelers at the two terminals, Tourelles and Pointe Simon. Thanks to the well-developed infrastructure as a French overseas department and its proximity to the international airport, arrival for guests from the DACH region is particularly convenient.
Airplane
Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport (FDF) is located just about 10 kilometers from the cruise port. Arrival from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland usually takes place via the hubs of Paris-Orly or Charles-de-Gaulle; additionally, cruise lines often offer direct charter flights during the winter season. A taxi ride to the terminal takes around 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic, and leads directly via the N9 highway.
Transfer & Shuttle
From the airport, you can easily reach your ship by taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. Alternatively, the modern rapid bus line TCSP (Line A) connects the airport with the city center of Fort-de-France, with stops located a short distance from the terminals. Many cruise lines also provide organized shuttle buses to ensure a seamless transition from the airplane to check-in.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight time from Europe and the time difference, arriving at least one day before embarkation is recommended. Accommodations directly in Fort-de-France allow for a relaxed start and a short path to the ship, while hotels in the nearby bay of Trois-Îlets are connected directly to the Pointe Simon terminal thanks to regular ferry connections (Vedettes Tropicales).
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
