Port information & tips for Toao (Tuamotu Islands)

Toao is a pristine natural paradise in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia and embodies the epitome of a secluded South Sea idyll. This almost uninhabited atoll impresses with its crystal-clear, turquoise-blue lagoons and an authentic atmosphere that invites you to dream. Highlights include the colorful coral gardens of Anse Amyot and the snow-white sandy beaches, which offer perfect conditions for snorkeling and relaxing thanks to their untouched beauty. Since there is no conventional terminal, ships anchor in the sheltered bay of Anse Amyot. From this anchorage, tender boats bring guests directly to the beach, allowing immediate access to the wild nature and the warm hospitality of the few resident families.

Traveling to the cruise port of Toao in the Tuamotu Islands of French Polynesia is a journey to a remote paradise. Since Toao is a largely uninhabited and undeveloped atoll without its own port infrastructure, arrival is exclusively part of an expedition cruise, usually via tender boats or zodiacs directly to the lagoon or the motus.

Airplane (International Arrival)

The central starting point for travelers from the DACH region is Fa'a'ā International Airport (PPT) in Papeete, Tahiti. From Europe, you reach Tahiti via long-haul flights, which typically include one or more stopovers in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Auckland, or Tokyo. It is recommended to plan the flight route early and allow for sufficient connection time.

Onward Travel to the Tuamotu Islands & Embarkation

Direct flight connections to Toao do not exist. After your arrival in Tahiti, onward travel to the Tuamotu Islands is via domestic flights with Air Tahiti or Air Moana to larger atolls such as Fakarava (FAV) or Rangiroa (RGI). From these regional hubs, embarkation takes place on your expedition cruise ship or a smaller catamaran that visits Toao as part of its itinerary. Please note that there are no docking facilities on Toao itself, and landings are made by zodiac or tender boat.

Pre-Cruise Hotel & Local Transfers

Due to the long international flight times and the necessary onward travel within French Polynesia, a pre-cruise overnight stay in a hotel in Papeete, Tahiti, or on one of the larger Tuamotu atolls like Fakarava or Rangiroa is strongly recommended. This allows you to start your cruise adventure relaxed. Transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the respective embarkation point are usually organized by the cruise lines or local providers.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
