Tahuata is a hidden gem of the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, boasting untouched nature and a deeply rooted Polynesian culture. The island enchants visitors with its mystical mountain backdrop, the aromatic scent of Tiaré blossoms, and an authentic atmosphere that invites you to linger. Cultural highlights include the magnificent church of Notre Dame de l'Enfant Jésus with its intricate wood carvings and the local museum, which showcases the famous tradition of bone carving. Thanks to the sheltered bay, guests arrive by tender boat at the central Quai de Vaitahu. This landing point is located right in the heart of the main village, allowing sights and local craft stalls to be easily explored within a few minutes' walk.
Tahuata in French Polynesia is a very remote island in the Marquesas, which has no direct transport links such as airports or main roads and is only accessible by sea. Cruise ships do not dock here, but instead tender passengers ashore for day visits.
Airplane (International)
For travelers from the DACH region, the journey to French Polynesia usually begins with a long-haul flight to Fa'a'ā International Airport (PPT) in Papeete on Tahiti. This is the central hub and offers connections from various international cities. Due to the long flight time, we recommend arriving at least one day before a further journey or cruise.
Domestic Flight & Sea Transfer
From Tahiti, you can reach the Marquesas Islands with domestic flights operated by Air Tahiti or Air Moana, which connect Fa'a'ā Airport (PPT) with various islands such as Hiva Oa (AUQ). The flight to Hiva Oa takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes. Tahuata does not have its own airport and is located just 4 kilometers south of Hiva Oa, separated by the Canal du Bordelais. The onward journey from Hiva Oa to Tahuata is then easily made by a public maritime shuttle, such as the "Te Ata O Hiva", or organized boat transfers.
Cruise & Pre-Stay
Tahuata is not an embarkation port, but rather a popular port of call on longer cruises through the Marquesas and the South Pacific. Routes with expedition ships or small luxury liners, such as the Aranui 5, head to Tahuata as part of their extensive island visits. Due to the long and time-consuming journey to French Polynesia, a multi-day pre-stay on Tahiti or another Society Island is highly recommended for acclimatization and to avoid travel stress.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
