Port information & tips for Mangareva (Gambier Islands)

Mangareva is the remote heart of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia and offers a uniquely authentic South Seas experience off the beaten path. The island captivates with its mystical atmosphere, characterized by emerald-green mountains, a deep blue lagoon, and the historic heritage of former missionaries. Absolute highlights are the impressive Cathédrale Saint-Michel with its elaborate mother-of-pearl altar and the viewpoint at Mont Duff, which rewards hikers with a spectacular panoramic view. Additionally, local pearl farms offer fascinating insights into the cultivation of the famous black pearls. Cruise ships usually anchor in the protected lagoon, while tender boats dock directly at the Quai de Rikitea in the heart of the main village. Thanks to this central location, the historical sights and charming streets of the village are easily accessible within a few minutes' walk.

Traveling to Mangareva, in the heart of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia, is a unique experience, as the port of Rikitea primarily serves as a tender port for cruise ships and does not offer comprehensive port infrastructure for embarkation. International guests from the DACH region typically reach this remote paradise via Fly & Cruise, where careful planning is essential.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region begins with a long-haul flight to Tahiti (PPT - Fa'a'ā International Airport). From there, you will continue with a domestic flight to Mangareva (GMR) with Air Tahiti. The flight time from Tahiti to Mangareva is usually four to five hours. Due to the limited number of flights, often only once per week, early booking of this domestic flight is essential.

Island Transfer to the Terminal

Mangareva Airport (GMR), also known as Totegegie Airport, is located on the offshore island of Motu Totegegie, approximately 9 kilometers northeast of the main town of Rikitea. The connection to the main island of Mangareva and the village of Rikitea is exclusively by boat, offered as a communal shuttle service. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, and the fare is payable directly upon boarding the boat. The landing point in Rikitea is Karorua Quay, from where the village's most important sites, such as the cathedral, pearl shops, and the post office, are easily accessible on foot. There are no taxis, rental cars, or ridesharing services on Mangareva.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long international flight times to French Polynesia and the often limited flight connections to Mangareva, an overnight stay in Tahiti (Papeete) before your onward flight is strongly recommended. In Rikitea itself, before embarking on your cruise ship, a pre-cruise overnight stay in one of the local family-run guesthouses can also be sensible. Some of these guesthouses offer a transfer to and from the ferry landing if required, allowing for a relaxed start to your cruise.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
