Port information & tips for Atuona (Hiva 'Oa, Marquesas Islands)
Atuona on the island of Hiva 'Oa is a fascinating jewel of the Marquesas and welcomes travelers as a mystical refuge amidst the wild beauty of French Polynesia. The village captivates with its dramatic backdrop of steep volcanic cliffs and lush vegetation, while simultaneously offering a special cultural depth as the final workplace of world-famous artists. Visitors can explore the Paul Gauguin Cultural Center as well as the Espace Jacques Brel and enjoy the impressive view of the bay from the Cimetière du Calvaire. Cruise ships use the pier at Quai de Tahauku in the bay of the same name, from which the center of Atuona, about two kilometers away, is easily accessible thanks to convenient shuttle connections or a picturesque coastal walk.
Atuona on Hiva 'Oa, in the middle of the remote Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia, is an extraordinary cruise port that requires careful travel planning. As a tender port, ships do not arrive directly at a pier, but instead bring their guests ashore by tender boat. Arrival from the DACH region is a multi-part journey, mostly by air.
Airplane
The journey to Hiva 'Oa typically begins with a long-haul flight from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland to Tahiti Faa'a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete. From there, convenient connecting flights to Hiva Oa-Atuona Airport (AUQ) are available with regional airlines such as Air Tahiti and Air Moana. These domestic flights take about 3 hours and 20 minutes to 4 hours and offer several connections daily.
Transfer on Hiva 'Oa
Hiva Oa-Atuona Airport (AUQ), also known as Jacques Brel Airport, is located about 4.5 kilometers northeast of Atuona. There is no public shuttle service to the village. Upon landing, taxis are available for the transfer to Atuona, or you can arrange a pickup service through your booked accommodation. The ride takes between 7 and 20 minutes depending on the source. Alternatively, renting a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for individual exploration; early booking is advisable here.
Pre-Cruise Stay and Embarkation
Given the long flight times and remote location, a stay in Papeete before the onward flight to Hiva 'Oa and potentially an additional pre-stay on Hiva 'Oa itself is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed arrival and provides a buffer for possible flight delays, which can occur on the islands. Since Atuona is a tender port, embarkation (if Atuona serves as the starting port) or landing for shore excursions takes place via tender boat from your cruise ship to a pier in the village.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
Also during the voyage: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
