Returning to the ship

Palmerston Atoll is an extremely remote and small atoll in the Cook Islands, primarily serving as a special destination for expedition and small cruise ships. Direct travel by car, train, or plane to the atoll itself is not possible, as there is no airport or harbor in the conventional sense. Passengers usually reach Palmerston by ship, often after a long sea voyage that typically starts from the larger Cook Islands or other Pacific nations.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region typically involves a long-haul flight to Rarotonga International Airport (RAR), the main airport of the Cook Islands. Direct flights are not available, so one or more stopovers, for example in New Zealand (Auckland) or the USA (Los Angeles), are usually necessary. Due to the long flight duration and the time difference, it is strongly recommended to arrive on Rarotonga at least one to two days before the scheduled embarkation to start the journey relaxed.

Transfer to the Ship

Supply and cruise ships occasionally depart from Rarotonga to call at Palmerston Atoll. Since Palmerston does not have a deep-water port, cruise guests are generally brought ashore by tender boat from the cruise ship. The transfer time from Rarotonga International Airport to the piers in Avarua, the main town of Rarotonga, is about 15-20 minutes by taxi or a pre-arranged shuttle.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

An overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel on Rarotonga is not only recommended due to the long journey but also offers the opportunity to adjust to the local time and explore the beauty of the main island of the Cook Islands before traveling onward. Many hotels on Rarotonga also offer assistance in organizing transfers to the ship and are flexible with luggage storage.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan accordingly and allow sufficient time for travel to the port, keeping in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.

Getting around

Arrival at Palmerston-Atoll is made possible by local tender boats directly at the small pier of Home Island. From this central point, you can immediately and easily enjoy the idyllic island atmosphere.

On foot

Tender boats

The transfer from the cruise ship to land is made possible by the skillful maneuvers of the local boatmen and offers an impressive first view of the reef. These boats serve as the most important connection between the anchorage outside the lagoon and the coast.

Island-owned watercraft

For explorations within the lagoon or to the uninhabited motus, small boats belonging to the residents are available. These allow for flexible movement on the water and also provide convenient access to remote snorkeling spots.

Returning to the ship

The journey back to the ship is particularly straightforward on this remote atoll thanks to the short distances and the warm community. All paths on the main island, Home Island, lead reliably back to the central landing pier, from where the transfer to the anchorage begins.

Tender and Island Boats

Since cruise ships anchor off the coast due to the reef, local boats or the ship's own tenders will take you comfortably from the central pier back on board. Please use the communicated departure times and arrive at the shore in good time to ensure the passage through the reef is safe and punctual.

On Foot

Orienting yourself on Home Island is very easy thanks to the small size of the inhabited area, and you can reach the port area from any point in the settlement within a few minutes. The sandy paths are flat and lead directly to the water, allowing you a relaxed stroll back to the meeting point.

Central Meeting Points

The area around the community hall near the landing pier serves as the central gathering point for the return journey. Here, crew members also coordinate the transfer and, together with the hospitable residents, ensure that all visitors reach their tender boat comfortably and promptly.
