Port information & tips for Montevideo
Montevideo is the charming capital of Uruguay and impresses with a relaxed blend of colonial heritage and modern South American flair. Situated directly on the banks of the wide Río de la Plata, the metropolis welcomes its guests with a relaxed atmosphere, extensive promenades, and impressive architecture. Outstanding highlights in the immediate vicinity include the culinarily famous Mercado del Puerto with its traditional grilled specialties, as well as the historic Plaza Independencia and the imposing Palacio Salvo. Cruise ships dock at the central Terminal de Pasajeros in the Port of Montevideo, which is located directly on the edge of the historic Ciudad Vieja. Thanks to this prime location, visitors can easily reach the most important sights of the Old Town on foot within a few minutes.
The Port of Montevideo welcomes travelers directly in the historic Ciudad Vieja district and, as a central hub on the Río de la Plata, is excellently integrated into the city's infrastructure. For guests from Europe, arrival at the modern Terminal de Pasajeros usually takes place via the international airport or, thanks to its proximity to the border, conveniently by ferry from neighboring Argentina.
Airplane
Aeropuerto Internacional de Carrasco (MVD) is located approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the city center and is served by major scheduled airlines such as Iberia, Air Europa, or LATAM via European hubs like Madrid or São Paulo. The travel time from the airport to the cruise terminal is approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic, with the route via the picturesque Rambla coastal road already offering initial views of the Rio de la Plata.
Transfer & Shuttle
For the journey to the port, reliable licensed taxis and so-called remises are available at the airport as well as at the central Tres Cruces bus station, guaranteeing fixed rates for the trip to the Old Town. In addition, many cruise lines offer direct shuttle connections from the airport straight to the ship, while travelers from Buenos Aires can use the fast Buquebus ferry connection, whose terminal is located in the immediate vicinity of the cruise berth.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight duration from the DACH region and the time difference, arriving at least one day before embarkation is highly recommended. A stay in a hotel near Plaza Independencia or in the charming Pocitos district allows for a relaxed start to the cruise and provides the ideal opportunity to explore the laid-back atmosphere of the Uruguayan capital as well as the famous Mercado del Puerto directly at the port entrance.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
