Port information & tips for Paracas
Paracas is the shining jewel on Peru's Pacific coast and is considered the gateway to a fascinating world of vast desert landscapes and impressive marine biodiversity. The region captivates with the contrast between the deep blue ocean and the golden dunes, creating an incomparable maritime atmosphere. Absolute highlights include boat trips to the species-rich Ballestas Islands, the mysterious El Candelabro geoglyph, and the breathtaking Playa Roja in the Paracas National Reserve. The port of Paracas, located on Peru's beautiful Pacific coast, is the gateway to the famous Paracas Peninsula and the impressive Paracas National Reserve. Cruise ships typically dock at the modern cargo port of Puerto General San Martin (Pisco), from where passengers travel by tender boat to the small town of El Chaco. Arriving the day before is highly recommended due to international flights and transfer times, ensuring a relaxed start to your cruise adventure.
Airplane
For travelers from the DACH region, Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) in Lima is the closest and most relevant destination airport. It is located approximately 250 to 280 kilometers north of Paracas. Although there is a smaller airport in Pisco (PIO), which is only about 7 to 11 kilometers from Paracas, it primarily serves charter flights and sightseeing flights over the Nazca Lines and does not offer regular commercial connections from Lima or international destinations.
Transfer & Shuttle
Paracas is easily accessible from Lima Airport (LIM) via road. The drive along the Panamericana Sur (PE-1S) coastal highway takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic. Various private transfer services, including Daytrip, Gringo Taxis, and Mytransfers, offer comfortable door-to-door trips directly from the airport to your hotel in Paracas or to the port. Alternatively, you can use high-quality coach services from providers such as Cruz del Sur, which offer regular connections between Lima and Paracas. Pre-Cruise Hotel
Staying at a pre-cruise hotel in Paracas or Lima is highly advisable due to the long journey from the DACH region and the transfer time from Lima to Paracas, helping you avoid jet lag and arrive on board well-rested. Many of these hotels are located directly on the bay and offer a relaxed atmosphere before your embarkation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will typically include a fixed check-in time slot, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times may change at short notice.
