Port information & tips for Perleninseln

The Pearl Islands are a tropical jewel in the Gulf of Panama, delighting travelers with untouched nature and a fascinating history. The archipelago offers an exclusive atmosphere of turquoise waters, white coral sands, and first-class whale watching opportunities. Furthermore, the absolute highlights include the picturesque Playa Ejecutiva, the historic Playa Larga on Isla Contadora, and the pristine coastal stretches of Isla Saboga. As large cruise ships anchor in the protected bay, shore excursions are conducted via tender boat directly to the central pier on Isla Contadora. From this landing stage, the dreamlike beaches and the charming village center can be easily explored on foot or with rented golf carts in just a few minutes thanks to the short distances.

The Pearl Islands in Panama are a breathtaking archipelago in the Pacific and are increasingly being visited by smaller cruise ships and expedition cruises. Since the islands themselves do not have a large international cruise port in the classic sense, arrival for guests from the DACH region typically takes place via Panama City, from where the islands can be reached by ferry or domestic flight. Due to the long flight time, we always recommend arriving at least one day before the scheduled embarkation.

Airplane

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) near Panama City is the main gateway to Panama and is served from Europe with a connection. It is located about 24 kilometers east of the city center and is well connected to the port. From PTY, you can reach either a ferry terminal in Panama City or a smaller airport such as Albrook "Marcos A. Gelabert" International Airport (PAC) for domestic flights to the Pearl Islands. The flight time to Contadora, one of the main islands, is about 20 minutes from PAC.

Ferry & Transfer

From Panama City, there are regular ferry connections to the Pearl Islands, particularly to Contadora and Saboga. The ferries often depart from terminals on the Amador Causeway, for example from the Fuerte Amador Naos Pier or the Flamenco Marina. From Tocumen (PTY), you can reach these ferry terminals by taxi or a pre-booked shuttle in about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. The ferry ride to the Pearl Islands takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on the destination and ferry company. Cruise lines often offer organized transfers from the airport or partner hotels to the respective departure points.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

After a long-haul flight, an overnight stay in Panama City is highly recommended to start your cruise adventure relaxed. Numerous hotels in the capital offer comfortable accommodations and facilitate transfers to the ferry terminals or the domestic airport. This allows you to enjoy the amenities of the city before making your way to the idyllic Pearl Islands.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
