Port information & tips for Isla Aguja (San Blas)
Isla Aguja is a paradisiacal jewel in the San Blas archipelago off the coast of Panama and embodies the epitome of an untouched Caribbean island. The islet impresses with its snow-white coral sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and a relaxed atmosphere under swaying coconut palms. Visitors enjoy first-class snorkeling grounds directly off the coast and can simultaneously admire the fascinating culture of the Guna indigenous people and their famous Mola textile art. Since the island has no large deep-water port, cruise ships anchor in the sheltered bay and transport guests by tender boat directly to the central boat landing of Isla Aguja. From there, all the highlights of the compact island as well as the dreamy swimming spots are easily accessible within just a few minutes' walk.
Isla Aguja in San Blas, Panama, offers a unique cruise experience surrounded by untouched nature. Since it is not a conventional cruise port with direct connections, travel from the DACH region usually takes place via Panama City with a combination of flight, special 4x4 transfers, and boat trips to the islands.
Airplane
The journey to the San Blas Islands usually begins with a flight to Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City. From there, you can either choose the overland route or take a connecting flight to Albrook Airport (PAC) in Panama City, which offers small charter flights to regional airstrips in San Blas such as El Porvenir or Corazón de Jesús. These flights take about 40-45 minutes and provide a fast and scenic option, albeit with strict luggage restrictions.
Transfer & Shuttle (4x4 and Boat)
The most popular way to San Blas is via an organized transfer from Panama City. A 4x4 vehicle will pick you up early in the morning (often between 5:00 and 6:00 AM) directly from your hotel. The drive to the port of Cartí on the mainland takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours over a sometimes challenging, winding jungle road that may only be driven by all-wheel-drive vehicles. At the border crossing to the autonomous Guna Yala territory, an entry fee (approx. 20-25 USD per person) must be paid in cash, and the original passport must be presented. From the port of Cartí, you continue by motorized boat (Lancha) in about 15 to 90 minutes to the islands, including Isla Aguja. Secure parking is available at the port of Cartí for a daily fee (approx. 5 USD) if you arrive in your own 4x4.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the early departure times for transfers to San Blas (often between 5:00 and 6:00 AM), an overnight stay in Panama City on the day before embarkation is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to your island adventure and avoids stress from possible flight delays or traffic issues on the day of departure. Many hotels in Panama City also offer good connections to the pickup points of the transfer companies. Large ships anchor off the San Blas Islands, and passengers are brought ashore by tender boats. There are no traditional terminals here like those known from other cruise ports.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
